Returning from the aborted ski trip last week, I noticed several street racers taking advantage of the reduced congestion on I-5. A couple were 30-40 over.

At home in the yard, when the atmospheric channeling is right, I hear the motorcycle racers running on I-5. And I'm hearing more of them moving well over the limit (by audio direction finding, determining how fast their location angle changes) during what would normally be congested commute hours.

And I've caught a few of them speeding past on the surface streets during our afternoon neighborhood walks.

State Patrol notes that total collisions are way down, but haven't indicated whether or not the decline is proportional to traffic reduction. Vehicle killings of pedestrians and bicyclists have not ceased.

definitely a lot of speeding around here. and on the 'busier' roads, racing and jockeying for position. not a cop to be found anywhere

I'm just continually amazed/shocked at the evolution of the reaction.

Where is the line between reasonable, prudent scientific based protocols and reactions, and fear based overreaction?
I guess we all have to get through this together, and safety first.

What I don't like is that obviously we need information about the whole situation disseminated. So the media is serving a useful and needed operation.
    BUT....
What I don't like is what I perceive as unneeded story telling, primarily based on just sensationalism and getting fear based attention.
That's direct stories about individual corona virus based tragedies, that while REAL, I don't think need to be shared, outside of statistical evidence with the public.

But I'll concede that it's a fine, difficult line to walk, for us as the public and for the media in service to that public.

when you're competing for clicks, you gotta do something besides tell people to wash their hands.

but we digress from grocery store shelves...

My neighborhood Safeway has these plexiglass shields up between cashier and customer too. Though coverage isn't great, it is easy to step aside it.

This chain is a subsidiary of Albertsons, which includes these names:

I received my food that I ordered last Friday. Before Shoprite delivered it, they called up asking if I wanted substitutes for stuff they didn't have. I only had to do a few things. When I got the delivery, the driver said I was lucky, I got about 97% of what I ordered. He said a lot of others weren't so lucky.

definitely a lof of out of stocks or substitutions from wegmans delivery, but my daughter went to whole foods and got everything she wanted.

plus, they've hired a lot of clueless new shoppers and drivers to try to keep up with demand

It wasn't difficult except for things like toilet paper, hand soap last weekend. This weekend however things were pretty much back to normal except that the meat section was a bit thin. Couldn't find any hamburger....

For many people, statistical arguments have very little impact.
Emotional arguments have a significant impact as many people can “connect” to those arguments.

If you want to reach all people, you need to use different methods to reach different people.

You're lucky. We could not get plain white bread from Walmart last week. Fortunately we have the items to bake our own.

The wife has been doing the same here:).

    She's a good baker too;).

Flour has many uses, so we'll get more necessities to be made in house (y).

That's NOT really what I'm talking about.
I think you CAN reach people, with simply the facts.....which are dark and scary enough.
We IMO do not need specific reports on high mortality areas, or individual families that have lost a high percentage of family members within their own numbers.
There's a difference between disseminating needed information, and magnifying fear.
