I have no idea what it is, but it looked Saudi in some indefinable way (the jet black road macadam maybe), so I scouted Jiddah on a hunch and there it was ---
Mystery Shore Object, Jiddah, Saudi Arabia

I'll see what I can find in Google, but if Mojo thinks it's a tough find, I may not fare so well.

I still haven't got anything to post, so the field's open while I try to discover what it is I found!

Boy you ain't kidding. I checked all Bush's permanent airbases in Iraq I could find & this isn't one of them, and a cursory flyover of Syria, Jordan and Lebanon didn't spot it either. It's a military airbase (at least a shared use airfield) - those are ordnance bunkers at its southern extremity.

The Middle East is quite a few acres, too many to search with flyovers (even for something about 6 square miles big) - any clues you can think of that wouldn't give the game away but would cut down on the airtime?

It would give us good access to Syria from our current occupation.

Another giveaway clue, sir - it's a Uranium mine in Nigeria - putative source of the infamous "yellowcake" that so marred a famous whore's State of the Union speech.

I can't figure out the mine's name, though.

Well, again, I leave the field open (one of these days I'll have to cut off a piece of the world to stick in here, but not tonight).

Actually, not until Mojo's picture, but "mine" and a pile of what looks like bright yellow "crumbs" could only be one thing, especially with the clue that the world had heard "repeatedly" about this mine. I have seen gold ore and it looks decidedly metallic, very uncakelike.
