Google Maps Scavenger Hunt

The most prominent feature was the east west trending man made line. I figured was some kind of border and not a property line since it is on both sides of the lake.

The climate was trees with grass inbetween. It looked like mid lattitude forest.

The stream bed is more of a wash then a eastern type stream.

All this added up to a north south trending lake on a border on the west coast.

What came to mind first was Kentucky lake. It wasn't that Then Lake Champlain, not that. So I went to eastern Montana where the forest begins and went west. There it was.

Part of Glen Canyon National Rec Area. [Got a little lucky with this one. When looking for efusco's Garden of the Gods, I was over in the four corners area, and remembered seeing colored sections like this, so I zoomed in and followed the colored sections around. Also, while bmm said the center was the same elevation as the surroundings, it seemed the area around the center wasn't, so a loop of a canyon fit in with that geography.]

The link is to Wikipedia, not Googlemaps, because the Googlemaps satellite zoom is busted and the closest I can get to an overhead shot of San Francisco is a wide angle that includes Denver and the Aleutians.

Anyway, it's a Hitchcock shooting location for Vertigo: Mission Dolores in San Francisco.

Until Googlemaps fixes their satellite I can't post anything - if anyone's got an image already tucked away ready to go, have at it!

No - go ahead - my Googlemaps satellite is busted - I thought it was Googlemaps itself but since you're able to see satellite images there must be some flag in my copy of it that got sprung (all I can see is "sorry, no image as this resolution" tiles unless I back off to Mars).

So I'll tinker with the software and you go ahead and put up your next challenge.

Gotta be T.E. of Arabia. It's what THIS looks like, anyway. Googlemaps is terrible with names for these places and my atlas is in storage, so while I know where this is at the tip of the Red Sea near a town called Aqaba, at the border between Israel and Jordan, I don't know its proper name, and whether T.E. had anything to do with it is just a guess. But this gets the winning marker on the record while I go hunt up T.E.'s exploits on Google.

I've always liked the name of this capital city; even used it as a password once. It's hard to spell correctly without a little practice.

That's ye olde grid-iron, but whose I can't say, since that identifying bit of lawn stain looks like spilled blood (maybe it IS spilled blood? - these games can get kinda rough). I'm sure someone will recognize that logo though and I'll leave it for them to ID and win the prize.

Interesting that the scale isn't quite accurate: 54 feet on the scale spanning only 37.5 feet of the image. Either that or the guys with the lawn painting rigs were using yardsticks they got on sale because they were seconds :lol:

If the best clue is not the logo, then it has to be:

1) scale

2) color blue not green

3) Odd straight line marks on upper right and lower left

4) North not at top

5) Other clues I havn't ascertained

None of this does anything for me.
