Go to airliners.net and search on Country: Hong Kong Kai Tak Intl, Sort Sequence: Most Popular - then feel the hair on the back of your head stand up as you scroll though pictures of jets on final to Rwy 13 after having not quite finessed the turn at the checkerboard ---

It was the only ILS in the world that pointed the hurtling jets at a mountaintop - with minimums set so that if you didn't see the checkerboard straight ahead at the DH you did a missed approach. And as you'll see in airliners.net, even when you DID see the checkerboard and made your 47 degree dogleg turn onto final, the strong crosswinds would really mess up your judgement.

Sorry if that was too esoteric - its spectacle was too much to resist.

I had been searching for remnants of the Berlin Wall when it was first posted. Silly me forgot who posted the image! I was out today, so I missed your later clues. Not sure if it would have jogged my memory. I had read a story ages ago about that approach, probably in the Smithsonian Air and Space magazine.

P.S. I thought the hints were great (in hindsight!)

Google has been depressingly unhelpful along the lines of prison islands, fortified islands, walled islands, island fortresses, etc. etc. Something like this should be an instant standout somewhere in those searches, but, alas, all I get are tickets to Alcatraz and to reruns of Papillon.

Ah well, I though a palace was a hole in the ground, so I'm gonna go ride my bike awhile and let others try to find that speck in the ocean/lake/river/pond/puddle or wherever it is.
