Well, it was a nice day today, I was outside painting. It looks like enough clues. Time to start searching.

Well it is near Guadacanal, but pewd's father was probably not in the "Battle of Guadacanal," since (at least according to my quick search) the U.S. ships were sunk mostly by Naval fire or submarines.

My best guess so far is that he was involved in "Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands" and was on the U.S.S. Hornet.

Well I guess I need to find a new site.

I was looking for "Schloss Adler" (which is actually "Schloss Werfen") of fame from a Clint Eastwood movie. Alas, there is no high-resolution imagery there.

In the meantime, I stumbled on this site of the appropriate vintage. The intended user rarely visited it since he was afraid of heights.

This should not be an easy find.

Dad was on Guadalcanal, with the Seabees. He was on a transport ship, sunk by an enemy plane just offshore; fortunately uninjured, or I wouldn't be here ;)

Well, for some reason, the record of transports is tougher to trace. "Capital" ships are easier to track. Thanks for sharing.

tis been awhile since i read up on the history of this particular location.
i might have zoomed in on the location of the quarters of the intended user's retinue.
you're gonna make me dig out a history book, aren't you?

And quite a retinue it would be! :D (Weak hint!) :D

Although Wikipedia has its faults, from the roof line on their old photo of this item, I think I have the right one. Also, the road network or lack thereof going to the building I zoomed in on I think nails it down. However, since I just recently stumbled on the history of this site, I am far from an expert.

Maybe time for a new hint, or maybe just an old one. My rambling introduction to this site in the original post, believe it or not, has a thread that if properly followed will lead you to it. Google is your friend.

Any more would probably give it away too fast. Agreed Pewd?

It's the Kehlsteinhaus or "Hitler's Tea House". Even starting out knowing what and aproxinately where it was (Same mountain as Obersalzberg), that one is HARD to find. It just blends right into the mountain. I finally used Google Earth with the terrain turned on to check the mountain's shape.

Doh! The coordinates are right at the top of the Wikipedia page... That would have saved an hour or so....

This one is a cultural site, sort of.

Missed it the first time I looked there. Southernmost island off southern coast of South America.

    Here is the new image:

    [attachmentid=10015]

It is permanently intertwined with a German submarine.

Here's one of the two: Jeddah, 20 - 30 miles from Mecca

Now to find the other one ---

Ah, but of course, The Capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh

We've done so may airstrips in this game the only airports left are duster strips and the Martian Rover touchdown spot (but that's on another planet).

Motion picture location sites could be fun - lemme see what I can come up with ---

Good job.The airport in Riyadh used to be the worlds largest by area. When I realized it was no longer the largest, I added Jeddah ,as the clue was no longer very good. But I thought someone might recognize the dome in the center as a mosque.
Jeddah airport pictured is the Hadj terminal.Basically a big open sided fiberglass tent to shade the mass of pilgrims on their way to Mecca.
