Commissioned by the Oglala Lakota in 1948, Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski began blasting what will eventually be the largest statue in human history -- Crazy Horse on horseback pointing into the distance across the Lakotas' sacred Black Hills. The scale is amazing. Mount Rushmore in its entirety is not as large as Crazy Horse's head will be.

59 years and millions of tons of blasted granite later, later, the project is far from finished, and the visitor encounters a desultory fund raising effort almost from the moment the mountain comes into sight.

Interesting place, from land or aerial, but I bet most here don't know of it, so I'll give some hints.

1. The people here are so confused they shake their head for yes.
2. At one time, the residents may have known Jason and the Argonauts
3. It is not an island
4. That little dot on the road coming in from the left is an old windmill

The similar layout to Balkh makes me think I'm on the right track, and it's a greek spice-trading oasis town. I'm leaning toward the color of the higher resolution image on the left being correct - brown and dry away from the irrigation. There's something damn familiar about the shape, but I don't know where I've seen it.

Your clue pointed right at it: Waimea Canyon, Kauai, Hawaii - sometimes known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.


When Toups put up Avery Island as a hot landmark, this was the first place I thought to look ---

Regarding Avery Island, it is an island created by a salt dome, peppers (Tabasco sauce) put it on the map. If you are not familiar with it. http://www.tabasco.com has an interesting history.

It's the site of the finish of the 3rd Indiana Jones flick, Petra, Jordan, so it's pretty famous in the US, even if few know where or what it is. I didn't realize there was a mystery associated with the site, although there are many unanswered questions at most ancient archaeological sites.

In It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad (phew) World, Jimmy Durante's character buried his money from robbing banks under these palm trees (which are all gone now...). Took some work to find - IMDB says it was filmed in Agoura. It's in Rancho Palos Verdes, on Palos Verdes Drive.

This next one may be too obscure. It's related to the environment. It's not too far from the Big W (yes this Big W, no red herrings here).

There are two mysteries. The first is it's purpose. While it is called "The Treasury", no one has actually determine what it was used for. The second is why it was abandoned - though there appears to be some recent theories regarding a massive earthquake combined with shifting trade routes under Roman rule.

Now let find out why it is important. Found it by looking for a N-S road grid in the area of Palos Verdes, very few roads are N-S in the area.

This must be part of the Navy facilities in the area. Lots of closed areas etc. Like all bases, I am sure there are lots of environmental sites there.
