Well done, it's also refered to as the "Stiletto of the Ghetto"...a monicre I prefer. That one was entirely dependent upon someone noting the long shadow and searching for prominent towers/spires on Google.

Here are a couple photos from my trip there last year.

I've got 3 great spots saved at home, but I'm at work. If nobody posts up by tomorrow afternoon I'll put up one of those. Otherwise someone else is welcome to post an image in my stead.

Just a note that I'll be keeping Post #166 up to date with a list of all landmarks posted and identified, to help prevent duplicates (as well as show just how wild and eclectic this game gets at times).

I've posted way too many already, so I'll stand back awhile and let others put their challenging views into the arena.

No, you had it right the first time, Doc, it's Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro.

oops, it is Ipanema, my first guess before I edited my post...anyway, they're close and both make good elevator music for songs.

Yes, indeed. That's part of why my hint was so obscure... I had another hint lined up that would tie that in better, but Evan beat me to it. I'll give better hints next time ;)

Since nobody has posted a new one yet, here goes:

Hard picture, so here's an easy hint:

Your clue was a dead giveaway - Trinity Site, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico - but finding the damn thing on Googlemaps was very difficult - and I'm not convinced you have the right place: I suspect that This Place Here a mile or so away is the actual Trinity Site where, as the title of a book so ominously puts it, "The Sun Rose Twice" when the first nuclear bomb was detonated in 1945.

I've posted so many entries in this game I'll leave the field open to whomever wants to go next.

How about an entry from someone who hasn't posted any at all yet?

Maybe this would have been a better hint:

I'm not certain about the location either, but you can zoom in way closer on yahoo maps if you wanna check out both spots. I got the coords from wikipedia.

I'm not sure Googlemaps accurately zooms in on latitude & longitude - many times I've seen its ID flags displaced from the actual sites they're supposed to identify. So your Wikipedia coordinates are probably accurate to the fraction of a minute of arc, but Googlemaps is only approximate when zooming in on them. I don't know for sure that the other site is the true site either, but it has the appearance of a tended site (geometrically regular perimeter, fences, looks like a place someone would visit) whereas the original site looks quite a bit more neglected, just tracks in the desert. Good choice, by the way (even if your clue made it obvious).

You mean the hexadecimal number FF0000? That's 16,711,680 in decimal... Can you think of something that's commonly referred to as "16+ million" ?

If you can figure it out, it will help you find this body of water:

p.s. here's a shot that I think confirms the trinity test site picture I posted:

It looked like the Northeast to me, and I assumed it was a war monument. The revolutionary war seemed like the most historically significant, so after some quick Googling...

Minute Man National Historic Park, Massechusetts

Site of the revolutionary war's first battle.

For this one, all the hints you need are in the picture.

Pretty easy one even w/o a hint...hard to find for me though even knowing what it was
    Red Rocks Amphitheater

P.S. Great job on Base camp...thought it might be one of those that would come to somebody as obvious if you realized what it was.

    Mt. Everest Base Camp
    Red Rocks amphitheater
    Luxor Hotel, Las Vegas
    Minute Man National historic park
Cabo San Lucas harbor, Baja Mexico

I keep having what I think are good ideas, but a lot of places don't have the detail needed to post an interpretable picture. Still, I'm very impressed at our collective ability to figure these things out...considering the size of our planet and the possible variety of photos that could be posted we figure them out pretty dang fast.

OK you can add Cabo San Lucas harbor in Baja Mexico so that we can put Robincx's entry to rest.

    http://priuschat.com/index.php?s=&show...st&p=456364

You guys must have forgotten about this one. I was just there and so it was too easy for me to guess right off the bat.

p.s. Do we have to use aerial shots form Google or can we use other aerial shots so long as they are findable in Google Earth/Maps?

I'd say that's getting into sketchy territory. The main reasons why you want to post a GMaps image is 1. you get instant feedback if you're right (which means you can guess and post the next image in the same reply to keep the game moving) and 2. it ensures that you're posting a place you can actually find. I know most posters would conform to the "it has to be findable" policy, but it may create some housekeeping issues with people who didn't know any better.

I'm stumped on this one... but here's what I can tell from the picture:

    1. It's on a mountain top. The switchback in the road tells us that road is on a steep incline.
    2. it's overlooking a pretty steep dropoff on the top of the image. Note the shadows of the buildings. They seem like the sun is fairly high, but the long shadows off the rocks show a large vertical drop. Think cliffs.
    3. That's probably snow on the ground.
    4. if Evan hasn't been tricky and rotated the image, then it's most likely in the northern hemisphere, since the light is coming from the bottom (south).

hmmm.... Mountain top in the northern hemisphere... well that narrows it down.
