Good option for hybrid battery replacement or too good to be true?

How much confidence do you have that the shop recommending the hybrid battery replacement is both competent and honest? I know from far away this is difficult. If I were there, I'd replace the 12v and have them drive the car (assuming legal tags and insurance and see how it runs). If it runs OK, then you can sell it with a good conscience. If it doesn't change up and seem to run OK (and remember the gas is old and it can take some time for things to get back to normal) then you can do either the battery swap or the discount and let the new buyer make the choice.

If I were buying a car with a projected $1-2k cost that wasn't running right, I'd want a further $1k at least discount for risk.

Found the OP a 2010 battery with under 100k miles from a wreck in San Diego (from a member here). Changed out the case to a Gen2 case, cleaned up the bus bars, did a single reconditioning cycle on the charger, and installed it into the OPs car today. Charged her $1000 and she couldn't be happier. Car is back to life again.

You are lucky. Around here $1,000 won't even get you a junkyard Gen 3 pack.

True and many thanks! Car is running great. I explained the situation to my potential buyer and think she wants to go ahead with the sale, but either way, I have a functional car now without having spent an arm and a leg.

In L.A., the closest shop that has an outstanding reputation is Luscious Garage is San Fransisco. I am sure there are lots of places near where you are that will do it and have good reputations.

You want a new battery from Toyota, go to the dealership.

So far, all good! I drove it around L.A. for a week or so after getting the battery replaced, then drove it up to the Bay Area, where I sold it to friends. That was two weeks ago and they haven't reported any issues, so I assume all is still good.

Thanks for the insight guys! Unfortunately looking for someone in Los Angeles and would just need it to last 3-4 years. Toyota quoted me $4k all in after taxes and installation

Was that before or after the core charge return? If the before the core charge return, that's ~$2700 for a new battery and install.

Not too bad if that is the case(y).

As far as picking up a used battery from a junkyard cheap in my area those days are long gone. When a Junk yard gets a wrecked Prius in that's the first thing they pull. There not stupid they know how valuable they are.

Around here, the next thing they do is say it's from a 2009 with 70K or from a 2015 with 30k.

In a similar situation, but a couple of years ago, my son's former teacher emailed me saying the dealership wanted $5K to replace her battery pack. Her Prius was about 7 years old at that time. I said that didn't sound very good, so the first thing I told her was, as has been suggested previously, replace the 12V battery and see if the codes come back.

She said that the 12V had been replaced, and she was still getting the codes. I told her it might be worth an attempt to disassemble the pack, clean all the connections, and put the pack back together. I said I'd never done this either, so when she was wanting to do this I'd be happy to come over.

I didn't hear from her for awhile, and finally she emailed me saying her car was working fine again!! She was very happy. She and her husband and two sons took out the pack, did all the cleaning, and reassembled it. These aren't electrical experts, but they are people with a fair bit of common sense, so they did fine.

So it is possible for Prius owners to work on the battery pack, and it might be fortunate to require only cleaning. A Prius expert, either Cor or Hobbit, had spelled out everything somewhere, but I can't find it right now.

Sorry, slipped my mind. Hard to keep all the places straight throughout the whole country. No disrespect meant, and bisco cleared it up.
