Last time I read a report on LiIon Recycling the recycling costs were about 5x the cost of the raw Lithum+refining, because the lithium is so cheap to buy.

You are assuming GM will still be around in 3 to 4 years.....

GM europe, maybe not. GM in America and the rest of the world is making a great teal of money. Why do you think a company that size could disapear in 4 short years.

with government involvement, ANY company could disappear in 3-4 years, even Apple or Exxon.

Didn't we just give them a ton of loot 4 years ago to avoid failure........ and they are still making crappy MPG cars...

Since it takes around 5 years to develop a new car, I'm not sure what you expected 3.5 years when the bail out happened to change in terms of car models. If you thought they were great then, I'm sure you would think they are better now. If you thought they were crappy then, well... Cafe of GM has increased with their most popular small cars cruze and sonic.

Again, why do you think the company will disapear in 4 years? I'm sure they are testing the new battery chemistry in a volt or sonic ev mule.

Yeah I hear you.. any car that on normal commutes is getting under 120MPG overall is just a crappy MPG car these days. Used to think 50MPG was good, but now we have choices of pure EV or at least that use much much less gas. At least GM has one good car, as does Tesla. Ford FE is nice but very limited distribution. Nissan's is okay has better distribution but may have some design issues. Maybe someday Toyota will once again be a player in the high MPG game, but there is nothing on the horizon. But none of the car companies are selling enough of them to survive on that yet.

If only the government would mandate higher MPG and/or put enough tax on Gas to make the selling of crappy MPG cars unpalatable. Personally I prefer the tax-the-gas model, but our government does not have the cojones to do that.

Most, if not all of those CNG fueling stations can be used by government or fleet vehicles. Not open to the public.

I find it interesting that when automobile Lithium batteries reach their useful end of life, they are still at 70% capacity.
While not appropriate for autos. They can the be used for power backup, or other applications.

They may only have been pilot programs, but this was been with NiMH auto batteries.

It may take 1000 full cycles to reduce the capacity to 70%, but after that, capacity lost will be accelerated exponentially, i.e. another 30=50 cycles will reduce to zero capacity making the battery useless.

What's with all this " blame the union" BS? Labor unions have nothing to do with R&D. If the engineers design it, union workers with put them in the cars. Plain and simple.

Maybe you should ask Hostess why the union gets blamed.

They've been in bankruptcy, got huge union concessions, and the CEO triples his salary to $2.5 million a year.

30 percent or less of its life has been used. This leaves a tremendous amount of life that can be applied to other applications like powering a structure before the battery is recycled
