Ah, I did not know this. Pretty clever, but still seems bad when you have one or more of the 23 (or 25) batteries be different than others in series. Still a problem, but I guess less severe than all cells in series.

Tesla isn't mixing and matching cell types.

Their Model 3 in China uses different cells than in the rest of the world, but it is the same type of cell through out the pack.
VW is prepared to use different cell types in order to account for shortages, but it doesn't seem to be a mix and match approach.
Even GM's plan isn't mix and match. What they are doing is basically putting multiple small battery packs into an EV to make a big one. The individual packs could have different cell types from each other, but not within them.

Unless Elon tweets it or it shows up in the Tesla investor site, I'll wait for "Battery Day" in April.

Plenty of news of them using CATL and LG Chem for China to not strain their supply of cells for the rest of the world. Even has been discussed here.

As an engineer, found this interesting even though this is about about GM and not Ford. This engineer has quite a breadth of experience and just shows the level of, not just toe dipping interest, but full expectations of at least one company other than Tesla.

Ford's secret weapon, top battery guy Bob Taenaka came from NASA

An interesting side note, lithium sulfur dioxide batteries are for real - they went to Jupiter.

Edit: meant to say this thread is about GM.

no doubt every company is hiring the best engineering they can find. if someone has a breakthrough, it would push them way out in front.
still, the odds are very low, as thousands of brilliant people all over the world are working on battery tech with little success.
incremental advances as we've been seeing are the more likely scenario.

companies other than tesla are so far behind, they're hoping for a moonshot, instead of doing the grunt work tesla did to get where they are today.
and maybe for good reason. catching up may be difficult, if not impossible, should the tide turn to electric vehicles at some point.

Sulfur batteries are also being used in grid storage.
