Humm, I got those tuner lug nuts with spline wrench adapter from Discount tires for my winter wheels. The problem is, the wheel has holes for both 5x100 and 5x114.3 and holes are too small for the Toyota lug nuts to fit inside. Are there any options for other lug nuts?

Yeah, I really hate those lug nuts and adapter, so much so that I am thinking of buying another set of OEM wheels.

It sounds like you have alloy wheels? I don't know about lug nuts, but just wanted to clarify. I should probably find some closed end lug nuts for my steel wheels so the ends of the studs don't rust.

Yap, it is MB Wheels ICON 15 inch cast aluminum alloy wheel. MB Wheels Icon Wheels - Tire Reviews and More At the time I was looking for winter wheels and tires for my PRIME, this wheel was cheaper than steely.

It looks like the thread on the stud is M12x1.5, and the stock wrench size is 21mm. Can anyone confirm?

Do you mean Toyota OEM lug nuts spec? This is what I found.

    TOYOTA OEM
    Mag Seat Style
    12MM X 1.50 Tread Size

"Toyota" puts that special beveled edge on the end of their OE lug nuts so that they will work with a spare tire* / steel wheel.

    So to sum things up:

    1) Steel wheels with an open face use the Toyota OE lug nuts with the beveled edge on the end.

    2) Double cut alloy wheels need Tuner lug nuts.

Yap, Toyota OEM lug nuts do work on a steel wheel. I bought a set of open-end conical lug nuts just for my full-size spare tire which is on generic steel wheel thinking the OE lugs will not work on the steely. I tried OE lugs on my steely, and it was fine. I test drove 15 miles with it. No shaking or loosening. The picture on the right side is showing Mag seat style OEM lug (left) and open-end conical lug (right). The left picture is steely with full-size spare installed using OEM lug nuts.

I think either of the above will "work". The downside with using the OEM's (on left): they look odd. Still I think the taper area is sufficient. The downsides to the open-ended: they have no shoulder, so you need to be careful when putting a socket on them, to avoid chewing the paint of a painted steel rim. Maybe that's not much of an issue, depending on your OCD level. Also, being open ended, it leaves the tips of the studs-exposed, prone to rust.

I've got the open-end style, my work arounds:

    1. I'm the only one installing them, and I take care with socket, apply a little masking tape to the edge too, for insurance.
    2. After installing them, I put a drop of 3-in-1 oil on the tip of each stud, brush it around with an old toothbrush. About half-way through winter, repeat.

I would like a acorn style, with a shoulder. Trouble is, all the ones on Amazon are 1.5" tall, kind of one-size-fits-all I guess, but I don't like the look.

For me, this is only for my full-size spare tire. Looks are not important, but being able to just use OEM lugs will make changing a flat tire bit easier.

And now for the Best Reason to use your Toyota OE (Free) lug nuts on your steel wheels.

They fit your lug wrench... I'll say it again, they fit your included 21mm Toyota OE lug wrench.

There are countless lug nuts on the market, if the proper research is Not done, there's a good chance someone will buy a lug nut that is smaller than the Toyota 21mm lug wrench.

Here are two smaller diameter lug nuts that could easily be bought by mistake.

These are the Toyota ones, they're 21 mm socket sized:

Those are nice with the black color, these would work too on a 15inch Steelie?

We disagree. The conical tip on the OE lug nuts are to hold the compact spare that many Toyota cars have. 70 miles at no more than 50 mph. I would not use them all winter, all speeds, all roads.

There are many choices in chrome acorn (closed end) bulge (the conical end is bigger than the hex) lug nuts of various lengths. As far as the wrench size, I'd rather have the most functional lug nuts and buy another wrench than use lug nuts I feel are very inadequate. One always needs to match the thread pitch and diameter, the length, and the end to match the wheels (conical for everything except Toyota OE alloys).

My name's not showing in your quote, but I recognize the text, that was me. Yeah granted the conical zone on the OEM lug nuts is not that much, it might suffice. Here's a snap of the lug nuts I'm using on my Corolla rim winter tires. They have the wider conical zone, but a lot of it is not used.

    IMG_1444.JPG

Still, I prefer these to the OEM, for various reasons.

Do you know what type of OEM lug nuts Corolla come with on its OEM steel wheels? Are they open end conical type? Or capped type? Are there lug nuts that can be used on both PRIUS OEM alloy and Corolla OEM steel? I found a set of Corolla 15" OEM steel wheels for sale, if they can be used on my PRIME with the same set of lug nuts, I may buy them. But if I have to use different set of lug nuts, then I have no use for them.

Here's the info from my Corolla rim purchase, back in 2010. This was through a dealership; both the rim and lug nut have Toyota Part Number:

Corolla steel rim, part no: 42611-02471 (2003-2008 corolla or matrix, CE, LS, S)
steel rim lug nuts, part no: 90942-01007 (plain, open-ended, galvanized)

(The bracket info is just my comments, from reading up)

If I plug in 2006 Corolla at McGeorge Toyota Parts, go to wheels, I see a couple of lug nut styles, here:

Wheels for 2006 Toyota Corolla | Toyota Parts

I believe the lug nut pictures on the above page are reversed, if you click on #11, it says it is for steel rim, and is the open-ended, part number:

    90942-01007

If you just image-google that part number, you get confirmation, it's the plain finish (galvanized?), non-shoulder, open-ended lug nut. :(

I would like a chromed, acorn cap with shoulder style lug nut. One that does not stick out 1.5", like the typical after-market offerings.

I guess Toyota's logic is that you're supposed to put a plastic wheel cover over this lowly steel rim, the lug nuts aren't visible?

    Thanks for looking it up.

Well, if that's the logic, most of PRIUS alloy wheels including PRIME should have open ended lug nuts, since most come with a plastic wheel cover. Since my PRIME's alloy wheels with a plastic wheel cover came with Mag seat style OEM lug nuts, and the Corolla steel rim comes with open ended conical seat lug nuts, I guess that means the mag seat type lug nuts (Type B in the diagram below) are only for the alloy wheels? Thus I may have to look for used Prius alloy wheels if I want to keep using Mag seat style OEM lug nuts both on summer and winter wheels.
