Gen2 Prius: Custom PIDs for Torque (Android App) with formulas

Good thinking! If your Prius custom pids are now available, then they should work as before...

Been away from using my Torque Android on my Lenovo tablet. Used it last year on a 5000 mile road trip. Worked ok to a point then stopped connecting to the ELM 327 mini Blue Tooth adapters and wouldn't work with the ELM 327 (standard size). Stuffed it away and just got back to it this weekend since I got another Prius Gen2 '04 and wanted to check for any codes.
I can't get it to read either of the ELMs. The tablet setup shows they "were" previously paired but aren't connecting to either one.
Now, these are both pretty cheap units and I did leave them plugged into the OBD2 connector for long periods of time on the trip and maybe over night sometimes. So, it is possible they are dead. The standard one, when plugged in cycles thru the LEDs and then stops with a Red on. No other activity. A couple times I saw some Led activity on the Mini but nothing while I have been trying to connect with the tablet.

Now, I have been looking on Ebay and notice that there are a few more ELMs for sale and some other. I a will to order something, Hopefully better but want to get some recommendations and try for the best.

Is ELM the only Blue Tooth adapter available that works "Best" with the Torque/Android??

For my own needs, I just want to read and clear codes, mostly. I no longer monitor my systems unless I am having a recurring problem that need to be corrected. The Prius system does a good job of tracking most of these and with the codes and MILs I can go to the book or???

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

AFAIK, the ELM is not a "Prius aware" scanner. To properly read & clear DTC's, you need a mini VCI cable & Teachstream. You can order it on Amazon. Note that without extensive hacking, Teachstream must be run on a 32-bit Windows OS. If you have the professional (or higher) version of Windows 7 (and possibly Windows 8, I'm not sure), you can run Techstream in a Windows XP virtual environment.

 

Not exactly what I'm looking for, since I want to use my Android tablet or phone. I no longer have a laptop or tablet that runs Windows, just my PC which is Windows 7 Pro. but can't just that for trouble shooting my Prius.
I'm wondering if there is some way to for Torque to read the OBD2 thru this cable via it's USB port??

Possibly, but again, the DTCs it will read will be limited and the accuracy of information is unreliable. You need a Prius aware scanner to do it right.

 

Well after reading up a bit on the mini VCI cable & Techstream Amazon ad "Q & A", I think I see that it will run on my old Windows XP notebook computer. (Hmmm. have to put up with poor screen visibility in sun lite.) So I ordered VCI stuff and will see how that works.
I also see that it will work for programing SKS key fobs, etc..

The mini-VCI is no doubt the best Prius software available if you have a laptop, short of the more expensive Toyota Techstream.

But for those without a laptop or current users of Torque or Engine Link there are PID's available for reading Prius hybrid DTC's.

 

I would prefer to continue to use my Torque or possibly try Engine Link with my Android since I can use either my phone or tablet while on the road. (they do everything else for me now).
Torque was performing well until recently, until the problems I mention, with in ability to connect via ELM327. So are there any other OBD2/BlueTooth adapters that perform well with Torque??

Further, I also like the idea of getting into Toyota Techstream since there is so much more potential to address problems like programing SKS fobs to car, Air Bag, ABS and other technical trouble shooting. Truly an opportunity to do some of the dealer specific diagnotics, ETC..

I use Engine Link that uses WiFi rather than BlueTooth so cannot help here. Other Torque users will have to chime in here.

Mini-VCI is a knockoff of the Toyota Techstream. I do not know of the limitations of the VCI versus Techstream. Again others will need to chime in here.

 

Hi all,

I encountered this problem last year when using torque and my samsung galaxy s3 mobile phone.

What I found was when my phone android system updated beyond ice cream sandwich, torque app stopped working with the elm 327 Bluetooth scanner. I didn't realise at first as it was a few months later that I wanted to use torque to monitor the oem battery temps in our summertime.

So, what I did was this,

Downloaded the torque lite app from play store that is a free download, and used this as a test tool, this app connected to the elm scanner and engine ecu ok, and I could now again use the app to see the ecu. So, the later versions of the torque now work with the later versions of android.

Paid and downloaded the latest version of torque from play store and now everything is working as it should also using the prius pids.

So, now everything is working ok.

I must admit the torque I was previously using was not paid for.

So, hopefully this helps someone, but mine is now working ok.

My OBD2 blue tooth scanner is a vgate with switch, so you can leave it in place without battery drain. I have been using it with Torque Pro and my Samsung Galaxy S3 for 18 months without any problems.

This info is helpful to some extent, in that, I now know I'm not alone. However, my Torque Pro (paid for) and Android, GingerBread version are both 3 years old now and to my knowledge, nothing has been updated or upgraded. So nothing has changed since I did my road trip 7 months ago.
I have a Torque Lite on my Galaxy S3 that I downloaded from the App Store about 5 months ago and I have never been able to get it to work with the ELM327s, although I will admit I haven't worked very hard at trying to find the problem, thinking the tablet would work as it had in the past.

WOOHOO! Torque Pro worked a charm with all of the old parameters! Even tried the old ELM327 bluetooth plug, paired it with the new phone (in "settings" on the phone) , and it now works as well. Brilliant! It just now has to have one of the paired obd2 plugs as a default - I use one with a on/off button as a default.

Did you first pair the ELM327 adaptor with the tablet?

 

Originally, a year ago I paired both the ELM 327 and ELM 327 mini and they worked fine for the few system functions I was using but I never did get it to show fault codes or MILs when the would be evident on the dash display. I had to resort to a borrow OBD2 scanner to clear them.
Now, neither one will respond to my attempts to pair them. I think they are both burned out because I left them plugged in for days at a time.

Right now I am waiting for technical assistance with the install of the Mini-VCI Toyota Techstream dongle and software on my old XP notebook. That might be a the way to go until I can find a OBD2 (Prius Aware) scanner.

I too have techstream on an old laptop of mine, and I must say it is excellent,

It was easy to set up and is easy to use too.

I still use the elm blue tooth scanner for a quick look to see what the battery temps are like and to clear the odd trouble code,
But for more in depth stuff the techstream was very good, and well worth the money.

 

Thanks for the encouragement. I also think this "Hack into TechStream" will be very useful to maintain my own two running Prius and plus support three others of family members. I am still working on my install issues and am communicating with the vendor/seller for tech support.
Edit: I just searched the Gen2 Tech forum and found there are a couple of good active Mini-VCI threads on this topic. I feel we have kinda HiJacked this Torque thread and will move my comments to Mini-VCI Success | PriusChat

Hi everyone,

I got a ODBlink MX (bluetooth version) and torque last week. Most of the gauges work, but for some reason my "HV Current Amp" is stuck at 0 amp. any idea what is going on?

Also, the big red triangle on the prius dash lit up (for the first time since I got the car 2 months ago). Pulling the adapter out and back in turned the light off, but I didnt like that. Has thish appened to anyone else?

The ODB port is powered by the 12V battery, maybe your 12V battery is low?

I'll give it a look - would be strange though since the battery was changed last March.

Just read the quick reference guide. That strange icon on the MFD is the check hybrid sytem light. Obviously, I'm standing at 100,200 miles right now.

Other lights are the yellow VSC and brake lights.

Can't wait to get my hands on the car now..
edit: the lights disappeared this afternoon. Called the dealership, apparently this is a trio of light that frequently occurs when the ABS system has wet connectors or something..
