Gen III oil filter wrench

I think you had to pry it off because the plastic cartridge cap is 64mm and your 65mm wrench twisted just an itty bit enuf to lock on the apex of each of 14 flutes....esp if the cap was warm.
Just MHO tho................

 

There isn't a consensus whether the filter housing is 64mm or 65mm. Based on the part number (which I do not recall), I vote for 65mm. But I would really love to know BEFORE I actually purchase one.

 

Well, I note that my wrench has "TOY 640" engraved in it. I'm assuming that may designate 64mm.

I sure hope that's what it means, that's the one I bought also but I haven't tried it yet. Be ready for my second oil change next week and I'll see how it works compared to the plastic Wal-Mart one it replaces.

 

The 64 mm wrench fits perfectly IMHO. So perfectly that I thought I'd have to pry it off after putting the filter housing back on, because it seemed a bit snug. But it slipped right off.

 

I originally purchased the KD #3253 65 mm end cap oil filter wrench for my wife's 2007 Honda CR-V since it was suggested by a Honda dealer's website. Yes, the filter wrench fits tight on the OEM Honda oil filters too.

To end the mystery why this KD tool fits very snug I measured opening of flats of the KD #3253 65 mm end cap oil filter wrench and got these numbers with my digital caliper:

At the beginning edge of the flats = 64.55 mm
At the bottom of the flats = 64.16 mm

 

Got my 64mm oil filter wrench.... it has a 3/8 inch socket connection on it and seems to be built like fort knox with quality welding etc... very good buy for the price!

 

Yes, it should work better.

A better design would have been to make the center hole on the wrench square so a socket wrench extension would fit into it. I don't have a 24mm socket so I'm hoping there'll be enough room to use a common 10" adjustable wrench. Let us know how it works...

 

Mine is square?.. both of mine.. all you need is the 3/8" extension end to stick in. My old one is metal too, but thinner... even it should last forever, but the new one I bought I estimate to be 3 times stronger.. it really is a good value if you need one.

Just like the picture on the ebay page. The hole almost looks round but its not.. its square. Of course you can use a socket too if you if you like but the square hole is in the center of that socket connection.

Looks like the price is the same just different in amounts.. I paid 9.50 plus 2.00 shipping and this one is only 6.50 plus 4.95 shipping.

I followed the instructions given in the 2010 Prius Maintenance guide I found on the web (can't post yet as I am a newbie) (john1701a.com/prius/documents/Prius_Maintenance_Changing-Oil.pdf) wherein it says to use a 65mm filter wrench. I picked one up at the local Advance Auto Parts but it was too small. I used a belt type this time but will have to go try a few out at the store to find the right size. I'm a little perplexed.

All in all the oil change process is very simple though I have little confidence in the cheap little fasteners used to affix all the sheathing.

 

That is perplexing since I believe tumbleweed thought the 65mm was a bit sloppy and big and recommended a 64mm?

 

I have one that was marked 65 and I used it for my first oil change and it was to big by quite a bit. When I torqued the cap down it slipped and I had to pry it off with a screw driver. I'm doing my second oil change tomorrow and I will try my new 64 and let you know how it works.

 

Great!... I suppose its possible that some manufacturers are off a bit in thier measurements... but they certainly shouldn't be!

 

Just finished the oil change. New TOY 640 filter wrench works fine. It fits but not to tight and not as loose as the 65 was. Still had to pry it off the cap with a screwdriver but I didn't have to pry as hard so I consider it a total near success. I'm happy with it.

 

Good to hear Tom..... I can see how a better fit is less likely to get bound up and have to be forcefully pryed off than a snugger fit.

well this is a case of good news, bad news. i have a 65/14 in my stock but after reading all the post, it seems i am going to need the 64/14. oy vey.

 

I would just use it and see how you like it... one trick I've done before is put an oil rag around the cannister, then place the wrench over it.. but it may be too tight a fit to do that.

If you try it and think you want the 64mm.. I do recommend the one I got on ebay, its built really well. Looks like a giant socket!

Still a mystery since some are having luck with a 64mm. This part number "seems" to lead me to believe it is a 65?!

 

I think Toyota may recommend a 65.. not sure... thats whats on Johns PDF that shows how to do the oil change too... but if a 64 works better .. so be it.

 

A quick search on google says that everyone is listing their "comparable" tools as 64mm.
