Gen 5 Prius (possible in 2021) will we possibly see 60mpg?

    One thing I've always gotten a kick out of ( especially back in the day when diesels still existed :whistle: ) is the fact the diesel folks thought they were arguing apples to apples in the first place. The fact that diesel has substantially more energy per gallon vs. gasoline makes the argument a moot point. Plus the fact they are dirty as sin without adding additives and such, and the fact EVs are taking over...means that diesels are as 'dead as a doorknob'. They ain't coming back, folks...

    I still distinctly remember my coworker singing the praises of his Turbo diesel Jetta...and arguing with him that there was no way it was as clean as he thought it was. Not to mention the energy per gallon MPG discussion :whistle:. Well...he sure had to eat his words, eh? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

    Honestly, I'm wondering if Toyota is pouring their resources into EV development vs a new iteration of the Hybrid Synergy Drive. I'm still hoping for a new HSD down the road...but it very well may be delayed far longer than we expect.

    I think Toyota will continue to offer improved versions of their Prius Hybrid system because it's too good a transitional technology to other EVs across their vehicle lines. Would seem there's a solid consumer base for Hybrid only drivers who simply are not going to be ok transitioning to EVs in the nearer-term for various reasons (i.e. range anxiety, EV charge times, EV station avails, etc).

    Not to mention many other countries that don't have the infrastructure that we enjoy, hybridisation is a good step towards cleaner air for them.

    we don’t deep fry (or fry at all) much, but when we do we save the used cooking oil, and then drop it off at a place that turns it into biodiesel. I think our city buses are biodiesel hybrids. At least , they never smell like diesel.

    Yeah doornails go through the hinge, all the way through and beyond the timber of the door, and the projecting tip is then hammered over like a staple, ensuring the nail is unremovable, or “dead”.

    It would make more sense if Toyota made the 5th generation Prius a standard Prime model that had an electric range of 75-100 miles. That would be the only thing I can think of that would make car buyers who want a BEV to consider a Hybrid vehicle with 500+ mile range. Then there is the problem of newer BEV vehicles with real world 400+ mile range on a charge. I do not know what the Mendoza line would be for BEV vs. Hybrid. If a BEV car does 500 miles per charge. I think the days of the hybrid vehicles are numbered.

    On a side note. I liken the Prius to those old little Toyota and Datsun pickup trucks during the 70's and 80's for hauling capacity. If Toyota made the Prius longer. It could compete with large pickup trucks for hauling. My Prius fits a 65" flat screen TV new in the box. A brand new Honda lawnmower in the box. No problem.

    If the 5th generation Prius had similar performance numbers to the new RAV 4 Prime. I think that would bring in a different kind of customer. Motor Trend has the new Rav 4 Prime 0-60 in 5.5 seconds.

    A Prius PRime with 75-100 mile electric range would indeed set it apart. Right now I don’t see the value proposition for continuing with the Prius... hybrid and plug-in technology has gone mainstream. The only thing you really get with the Prius is better mileage... and a good chunk of people who are interested in that sort of thing have already gone to electric only.

    The Rav 4 Prime is a mythical beast... seemingly talked about, but rarely seen in the wild. There are none available in the Seattle metro area (prima Toyota country), and Toyota won’t even let you configure one online.

    That's well above our national daily average of 41 miles. Explain why that particular range is worth the cost, specifically for Prius here. Keep in mind, the priority of price varies throughout product-line. Diversification is important for good business.

    Yeah no kidding. I’d be happy as a clam with a simple hybrid. One that:

    1. Didn’t look like a deranged Pokémon.
    2. Had a dash with tactile/ergonomic controls.
    3. Didn’t require a 700+ page owners manual to set the time.
    4. Had decent storage, cargo space AND a spare.

    candidly, I DON’T have high hopes.

    Interesting points, seems like the Prius still delivers a competitive mpg advantage with good amount of standard tech / features + that 5-door hatch practicality for the price. I agree at full MSRP I wouldn't buy a Prius / Prime, but in the mid-20s, not sure what else compares with the same level of quailty. The RAV 4 Prime is sweet, but has a pretty big price bump (starts at $38k)...by the time you've optioned some stuff you're in the 40s...

    Pure EV options I find are expensive, give you range anxiety, and issues doing cross-state driving. I mean to think I have to add MORE time to get to a ski trip or vegas because of charging delays / time...yikes.

    Is setting that time difficult in the Prime? In our regular Prius, it’s as easy as getting to the time menu using the steering wheel controls and adjusting up/down.

    None are allocated to the entire state. It appears that they were allocated to only ZEV states, and Washington didn't join the ZEV party until the middle of last year, after those marketing plans were already set.

    The configuration tools are smart enough to know which zip codes have allocations of which items, and won't show you what isn't available in your area. That helps reduce irritated feedback from annoyed customers being vented to local dealerships.

    I could certainly be on board for a 'next gen' Prius if Toyota can up the bar in terms of efficiency. Because let's face it...that has always been the Prius' forte. If they can't do that...then they might as well forget about it. A standard plugin capability would be welcome as well. The Prius is also 'affordable'. However, now that the hybrid Corolla exists...and is pretty much jus as efficient, it throws a wrench into the 'affordability' argument.
