Gen 2 PCV replacement how-to with photos

    The official Toyota Prius maintenance schedule is silent on the issue of PCV valve replacement. I think that it would be reasonable to change the PCV valve every 60K - 80K miles.

    I'm holding out til 100K and do the plugs at the same time.

    What's the cost of the PCV anyway...<$5 (hopefully)?

    At 113k miles, I replaced the PCV using this very helpful pictures and instructions. I used them rather than the instructions in the repair manual.

    Guess which one is new! :)

    Thanks galaxee! I just hit the 100K mark and replaced my pcv valve. This post was very helpful. I did find it hard to lift up the L shaped plastic cover. The wires were pretty tight. I tried to unplug 2 of the spark plug wires (is that what those are?) and it seemed to give me a little more space to work.

    Just did the PCV on a 2002 Classic Prius. These directions are surprisingly accurate to this model -- I was a bit surprised. Couple of minor differences in terms of the screws, and as Patrick said, the wiring harness is really in the way. I was, however, able to work around that successfully, thanks to getting a 19mm deep-throat socket, which fits over the entire valve perfectly.

    The photos and instructions in the OP are for 2G. Classic is very similar. There are a few detail differences. For example when you remove the cowl covers over the windshield motor, you will remove a couple of screws on the ends, instead of removing plastic push pins.

    After I had removed the old PCV, I noticed an oil residue inside the hose I disconnected from the PCV. I presume this means my PCV (at 115k miles) was stuck open, or partly open. The pieces inside the old PCV still make a little noise when the PCV is flipped around in the air, but less than the new valve.

    Advice please, how to handle the contamination.
    Ignore ?
    Clean ?
    Replace hose ?

    It is normal for one PCV hose to have oil residue built up, as that comes from HC byproducts being sucked out of the crankcase. The other hose should be pretty clean since fresh air flows from the throttle body back to the cylinder head.

    If the old PCV valve still made a rattling noise (albeit less than a new valve) then it was still working, more or less.

    I used brake parts cleaner to clean out the interior of the hose from my 2001, but you'll see that Galaxee had warned against that in a prior message of this string. You might use kerosene to clean out the hose, or else buy a replacement.

    HMM FYI you dont have to take all that apart to get to it LOL.. i did mine in about 5-7 minutes with out taking it apart

    My guess is that it would take most owners much more than 5-7 minutes just to figure out where the PCV valve is located...

    Thanks so much for the post. I have two 2005 Prii and, with my laptop atop a stool, I changed the PCV for both cars. Instead of the Crescent wrench I used a 19mm open end which worked fine.

    Hi Peter,
    I'm looking to replace my PCV valve soon here. It sounds like the job was pretty easy. Can you offer any further advice other than what was given? Did you put any kind of lubricant on the thread of the PCV to help it seal better? Did you look at the PCV hose and/or change it?
    I am someone who hasn't done much work on cars except for change spark plugs and air filters so any further tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Is the hose difficult to replace? I am planning on doing my PCV valve next weekend but I want to replace the hose if it is relatively easy, while I am down there anyways. Any tips would be much appreciated.
