If we get $12/gallon gas anytime in the next 2 years we all better have a pile of cash in the backyard because the resulting world economy would make the Great Depression look like a picnic.

$12/gallon gas would be pretty disasterous. Unless everyone has tripled their efficiency (and I mean everyone, not just for transportation, but production as well).
Luckily, many companies are starting, or have realized what is coming and are starting to make adjustments.
Hopefully GM is making those adjustments as well with the Volt.

Israel is the smartest of all -- partnering with Renault-Nissan to develop a fully elec. car that will be utilized in a cell-phone like plan.

Where will they get all that elec. from? Solar energy in the desert.
The Saudi's might monopolize petroleum, but not the sun.

Tell you what Malorn, something I hate more than GM is pig headed flag waving ignorant Americans. I'm not calling anyone here that by the way but there are plenty of them in this world.
If the US monthly average price of "gas" (gas isn't a liquid) drops to or below $3.00US per US gallon I'll change my avatar to a bald eagle for a month. How's that? and you get a Toyota Yaris avatar if it doesn't. Deal?

Snark aside, it's a reasonable question. To wit ...

Feb: I'm paying around 2.75 (NJ has some of the lowest gas prices in the country). You predict gas will drop 50 cents. Maybe even go under 2.00. No word from you until ....

Apr: I'm now paying around 3.00. You come back & say your prediction was 6 months too soon. Again you're gone until ....

Aug: I'm now paying between between 3.60 ("generic" station) and 3.80 (brand name). Prices here peaked around 4.00 a month ago. You're back again making a "double or nothing" bet that gas will be under 3 by the first of the year.

We all know that the real world interferes with our happy little virtual world here. But perception is often reality. In this case, it looked like you tucked your tail between your legs & ran while prices were rising. Now that they're dropping, you're back saying it will go (in my area) as much as a dollar lower in the next 4 or so months.

So, Stev0's question is relevant. If the reverse of your prediction happens and prices start going back up, will you again disappear?

I honestly wish I had disappeared here because of pride. You may have noticed that back in the real world the economy has not exactly been blossoming lately especially the domestic automotive sector. I have been very busy trying to keep movingforward in this mess and I have been to way too many restructuring meetings in Detroit over the last 4 months. I am actually because someone said they missed me on here, I know you must be very surprised.

I honestly missed you, too. I love a good laugh, and your posts constantly make me ROFL, as the kids say nowadays. "GM makes quality vehicles" - the writers of The Onion wish they could come up with lines as funny as that!

Everyone probably knows a Malorn in their life. You can tip your hat to him r flip him the bird, its all a compliment to him. I believe Malorn may be a little right about this gas price issue. I say 'a little right'. I think what we have seen the last 3 months with the gas prices surging upward is the public scurrying to make adjustments, even those gas guzzling SUV owners with american flags decals stuck on their bumpers....and the oil company loving politicians in bed with these vipers are now left exposed, democrat and republicans.
I do think we will see a leveling off of prices. The prices are going to simply reflect what the american public can tolerate. While the public tolerates the current price of gas the economy is suffering on many different levels; everything the public gets require oil and/or transportation.. The intense heat will be on the slimy politicians until we see a fairly substantial decrease in gas. But where I differ with Malorn is the gas prices will rise back to its previous level and higher as other developed nations grow and car acquisition and traffic increases. Will we be ready before prices surge upward to $5.00 or $6.00 a gallon? BTW, I have not seen the gas prices dip to the previous prices as the price of oil per barrel decreases. The price of oil goes up one day, the next day you see the gasoline price per gallon go up. The price of oil had a significant decrease and I am still paying over $4.00 per gallon.

Some part of the drop in current prices at the US pumps can be put down to a strengthening US dollar. Although the Aussie is pretty well holding station to other currencies it has lost 10 cents against the green back.

Malorn, do we have a bet?
I'll even put the eagle and a chev emblem, can't be much fairer than that.

Keep in mind that your original statement was in Febuary, intending to bet on spring '08, NOT spring 09. The original statement also was a bet that gas would go below $2.

"I think there is a chance it could drop below $2.00/gallon(I know some of you will laugh and curse me) because of all the speculation in oil prices over the last year and the fact a recession started in the last 6 months. Notice the supply is higher than it has been in 14 years and refineries are running at only 87% of capacity. There is a better chance gas prices will get to $2.00/gallon before they reach $5.00/gallon."

Your new bet on going under $3 is probably depressingly correct. But demand destruction and economic depression is not something to gloat about. It's not going to salvage GM sales and could end up being the final cut for them.

I stand by my original post, gas prices will dip under $2.00/gallon before they reach $5.00/gallon. The closing of the loophole on specualtion at the end of June was huge. unfortunately the price will probably drop farther than it actaully should.

Why are you depressed about falling gas prices?

If Gm, Ford and Chrysler go down, you better have a place in the woods well-stocked with guns, ammunition and food.

You're desire to see gas prices drop is naked self interest as a seller of irresponsible gluttonous vehicles. You are wrong if you think falling oil/gas prices due to an economic crash will provide you with a flood of new sales. If the economy recovers to a point that people can actually go out and buy a car, the oil prices will be rebounding right alongside it. Where's the damn volt already? (Not that anyone will be able to afford it)

"If Gm, Ford and Chrysler go down, you better have a place in the woods well-stocked with guns, ammunition and food."
Are you implying I desire such a collapse? You are wrong and extremely offensive. I've been warning for 5 years of these problems and demanding that we as a country move away from wasteful consumption, precisely because I did not wish for the country to go through this type of depression.
And yes, I do have a place in the woods with food and guns, and no, I do not expect that things get to that point. That is the absurd prediction of the wingnuts of your neocon party. Some of which actually desire some sort of apocalypse.
If the big 3 go down, new companies producing vehicles that are actually relevant will take their place and use the former part makers that the big 3 have been using. But now they'll make parts for mass transit vehicles and small electric urban cars.
