Yeah, it's not as simple as a sign as unfortunately most people in this city could care less. They ignore handicapped parking signs, never mind ev parking signs.

Laws are needed and the used to be called brownies need to enforce it. And at the same time, actually install some charging around the 'rest' of the city, not so much just Manhattan. It'll be forever here though as Staten Island will always be the forgotten borough.

Perhaps I was not clear. The sign is off until the parking place is taken. The first comes on when they pull in. The second after the charging cycle is off with a one hour grace.

I think what he means is a law still needs to be passed here concerning evs, parking and charging and the proper law enforcement agencies need to understand it and actively enforce it. If I've further misread things, I apologize.

Nope, you got it! Not to mention EV and non-EV drivers need to understand it, too!

Courtesy of this thread I checked around and other than Nissan dealerships and a few spaces at PANYNJ airports, it's a jungle, er, pretty barren charge-less environment, out there from west of Newark, NJ to the tip of Long Island. Closest charging spots to many spots on Long Island are across the Sound in CT and RI!

I don't know. There are numerous charging station databases. Another is Alternative Fuels Data Center: Alternative Fueling Station Locator.

I don't believe there's a complete single one, unfortunately. I've heard of some bad data in Plugshare (e.g. some people listing they have CHAdeMO at home, which is virtually impossible due to the power requirements I mentioned earlier besides such chargers costing $15.5K, a min). There are some who are confused and incorrectly refer to 200+ volt level 2 J1772 charging as "fast charging" or "quick charging". It's not.

If all goes well, I'll have a Leaf in a few weeks and will have a bit of a better idea. I doubt I'll be using public charging much. Where I'll be working has some employee only Chargepoint stations. I don't know the details (utilization, whether they're really free of cost, etc.). I won't need it as the place is well within the roundtrip range of a Leaf.

And on #1, he couldn't even charge his car at that spot, due to his car not having a CHAdeMO DC fast charge port.

One doesn't need to stay w/a car that's actively charging, but it'd be good to leave behind a charging card/contact info when doing so.

That is not true. I was trying to tell you that I came here for charging purpose. You insisted that my car is a hybrid. How do I know if you really know a PIP is? If you asked me why my car was here, i would tell you i was here to charge the car and i was figuring out what this charge station is. I was going to ask you about this charge station, but you already gave me a altitude that you called a tow company to tow my car. I don't think it was nice, and it blocked all the conversation we could have.

    cwerdna,
It seems that you like use law to define things. There is no law saying that I cannot go to a charging station to find out what charger it is. The station doesn't even have a sign saying which vehicles will work. It is first time i saw this type of charger. I think it is fair for me do a little research on internet. I don't mean to block any EV spots. I know how it feels since i encountered many times that ev spots were occupied. I don't mean to offend any LEAF drivers. In such situation when someone already made conclusion that you are blocking the spot, what else could you do?

quote="cwerdna, post: 1836799, member: 8380"]Your edit was wrong. The Leaf driver may

have been furious but he sure wasn't the ignorant party.

I already outlined it. OP (PiP) driver:
    - broke CA law by not actively charging in the spot he occupied
    - seemed ignorant to the above fact
    - he was ignorant of charging standards and occupied a spot for a charging station he couldn't even use
    - ignored the signage pointing to stations w/compatible w/his vehicle[/quote]

If you came for "charging purposes" you would have gotten out tried to charge and found you were in the wrong spot. You left the vehicle parked backwards in the charging spot. You said you went on errand instead and came back with boxes of some sort. You lied about the whole thing in public calling the other person names. Completely dishonest above every aspect of it.

Too funny you thought you'd brag about putting one over on the EV drivers and instead you got caught like a roach when the lights go on.

If you know PIP more, you will notice that the charger port is at the back of car. So you need to park PIP backward for charging.

I never mentioned any name in public. I don't even know who that guy is, other than drivinga black Leaf.

I don't mean to offend any Leaf driver. I felt that that driver should not already made conclusion that I was blocking the spot in purpose before he considers any circumstances
I understand how much more important EV spot is for Leaf than for PIP.

Again, i posted this to express my disappoinment for the altitude I received from that Leaf driver. I believe things could have been better if he was not furious when he saw me returned.

First of all, forget the law. It's wrong and inconsiderate for any vehicle to block a designated charging spot and not be actively charging. Your vehicle was incapable of even using the CHAdeMO DC fast charger. So, you were ignorant there. You should've left the spot as soon as you encountered the incompatibility. As someone else stated earlier, you blocking the spot and leaving your car there is just the same as a Hummer doing the same thing.

Then, there's California law. Google for ab 475 charging and ab475 charging. You broke the law by occupying the spot while not being connected for charging purposes, which was impossible. It seems you were ignorant of that too.

I'm pretty confident the Leaf driver knew your PiP was incapable of being charged via CHAdeMO (since in the US, there are only shipping 2 models of EVs and 1 EV motorcycle that are compatible), which is why he asked you to demonstrate. There are a few prototypes from other automakers that are compatible.

From all this, it's pretty clear who the ignorant party was.

Perhaps the "moderator" should take the "conversation" offline?

And why is X A N A X a prohibited term, since it seems to be needed?

Folks, i would like to say it is my bad not to include all the info at beginning. I was thinking this incidence was a simple unawareness of the difference between Hybrid Prius and PIP of the Leaf driver. It turned out, after many posts, that it involves difference in CHAdeMO and J1772 chargers, and parking regulations which I am not aware of. Sorry for my bad.

This brings back the charging station and protocol standards issue. Why are scarce public parking/charging spots held out for such a miniscule minority of vehicles?

The plug-in Prius is still a hybrid gasoline-electric vehicle. The Nissan Leaf driver was correct in identifying the plug-in Prius as a hybrid.

The OP has the option of filling up at a gasoline refueling station; the Nissan Leaf driver does not.

OP was out of order in occupying the charging spot.

    Charge at home.

Why allocate scarce resource and even scarcer charge protocol at all, to what is a truly miniscule user base?

See ... THIS is the REAL point - an individual driver.
1 - The OP, plchung ends by saying, "what a crappy car you got" ... ie; admits that HE is just as adversarial as the one (s)he's complaing about.
2 - We all like to paint our self in the best light to appear 'right' ... and so I'm wonder how much worse the story really is.
3 - We like to focus 'evil'. We associate it on a person, or a belief, or group. Examples:
"I saw this black guy do such and such ..."
"I watched this gay person do such & such ..."
"There was this old lady that did such & such ..."
Here, the OP wants to associate EV drivers, in particular the Leaf driver as being, "one of them".
It's just another form of stereotypical behavior.

Down by John Wayne Airport, there are EVSE's that are NEVER available, because the same 2 plug-in's hog them all day long ... well after they're charged.
See what I did? I never said whether it was a PiP ... a Volt ... a leaf, etc.
Bad behavior is bad behavior ... IT'S NOT a GROUP behavior.
And if I EVER hear of an EV driver complain about plug-in hybrids haveing "gas anxiety" ... then laughing at how stupid they are for their pathetic car choice ... I'll F with them (as kindly as possibls) too.

Let's grow up people. show kindness grace - tollarance and humility when we face plugins that wrongly think we're the enemy. That's how we win them over.
