You can do whatever you want. Give a try to repair what is there. Else look online for new or used.
Heck, I may even have one around here now that I think about it.
3ProngPaul gave some sage advice. But you can always pick away at your battery bit by bit as well. As long as you know what you are getting into.

Got the battery put all back together. Reconditioned and balanced 38 Gen 2 modules and installed them properly. Torqued down everything properly Put Ideal all over the busbars and the nuts (soaked both in vinegar and salt). Plugged in everything properly. Code I am getting now from Techstream after putting it back together is a p3000-123 battery control module. The car was not scanned with techstream before I pulled the battery but it was evident it was toast. Do ECU’s go bad in these gen 1’s?

Battery control system * was the p3001-123
Also now the car is showing a p3009 (high voltage leak detected) but I cleaned this case off vigorously with soap and water, dried it up well, and replaced every gen 1 module with gen 2 modules with excellent capacity. What could this be? Every module held perfectly. There was definitely leaking from the old modules.

I'm not experienced enough to know applicability to 1st generation cars, but there are a couple of threads around this board that show problems with the multipin connector on the battery ECU.

If a module is leaking, it shouldn’t be able to hold high capacity correct?

Here's the thread I referenced about in my previous post. Might check to see if yours is going the same way.
