Another update - spoke to the service manager, he agreed this seemed weird, and he spoke to the mechanic and tried to get the pads but they were thrown away (car was in there 3 days ago). Anyway he was really pretty nice about it and agreed it could have been an error on their part and we settled on a 50% refund.

    Break dance!
Dealer says breaks are worn to 80%
I measure the new pads I buy $60. And the old ones and sure enough new had 1/2" thick pad and the old one has a little over 3/8" left.
He could have said I've given you $20. Advice would you like to pay $100, and been more honest.
Seriously something is wrong, calipers sticking, corroded. Replace them and have Midas check the work.

That's good news. They should keep an eye on that mechanics work. Maybe even do a review of jobs.

There was a physical component to the brake recall: something in the master cylinder replaced. They had to take off wipers, wiper motors, and cowl below windshield for access.

do you think that work, if performed incorrectly, could affect the pads? i wonder if all the brake force might be going to the front? or is it an x type system?

Most of the braking will be with regeneration unless you brake hard.

FWIW I just check my pads and I still have about 8mm both front and back after 176,000 miles. I would suggest learning how to check the wear on your pads so this doesn't happen to you again.

A 50% refund seems to me as admitting that they're wrong. I don't know where you live but here in Europe things are different. You can get several brands of pads, and like mentioned earlier in this topic, it's not on common to replace the discs as well.
My 2005 Prius rotors could turn free, but the pads touched the outer (non worn) part of the rotor. Causing it to squeak so hard, it was annoying. Simply replacing the rotors (110$ a set on EBay) made is silent again. European fora state that an average of 80k miles is normal when u use the pulse and glide way of driving.
