Even though it's a heavier car, it has a 2.4 liter instead of the 1.8 in the Prius, and 200 total hp versus 134. I think that might account for the pep.

    :D

    Thanks,
    This is a Camry thread.
I was comparing it pep wise to the 4 cyl. 2012 Camry (non hybrid) that I test drove the weekend before.
I had a 1993 4 cyl Camry that had plenty of pep or power for me.
My wife complains about my 2009 Prius's lack of power on hills, some of that is the Cvt, where she doesn't feel the actual speed. Yesterday she was driving it up the steep hill by our house (45 mph speed limit) at 50 mph and rising. That is where I had to 'scold' her. She kills my mpgs.

Wow, hijacked on my own post (check the OP gramps).
While it is true that I originally posted this thread referring to a Camry, this is a Prius web site, inter alia, and my assumption is that most of the people on the site have some familiarity with Prii, hence my comparison to its power train. In fact I see you own a Prius, albeit with an even smaller ICE than the Gen III, but you see where I was going with that.

2.5 litre. 2.4 litre was the previous generation.

No harm meant. My 1993 Camry was my favorite car. My 09 Prius is a close 2nd.
I am not sold on the PIP, and I'm giving the 2012 Camry Hybrid some serious thought.
Actually I am not really a "gramps" I guess I need to change my name.

    Gramps sounds funnier, though. =]

I had a 2007 Camry Hybrid, and it was a very nice car, great ride, better than expected mileage. That was with the 2.4. I need the cargo capacity of the v, so that is what I am looking at now.

it is great to have so much choice these days. the hardest part is paying for it !
I got the gramps name because of having premature gray hair at 29.
My wife calls me grandpa daddy, and dies her hair to hide her gray.
I named my PIP "bluey" I thinking of adopting that name for priuschat....

I am picking my Camry Hybrid up this afternoon. I am grabbing it on a work trip so will have a decent ride back. I will update my first experience later today or tomorrow.

Drove it home this afternoon. I am really impressed. I got a Gray Metallic XLE. I drove about 160 miles and averaged 38.4 mpg's according to the computer (so probably a little less). That is very impressive for me as I tend to have a somewhat heavier foot. Not an aggressive driver, but cruise around 80 on the highway when it is open. Traffic was fairly heavy, so the ride wasn't totally open, but still had a decent average speed. I am really pleased with this first trip as my short trial with the Kia Optima Hybrid (lasted only 3,000 miles), I was barely breaking 30 mpg.

Without knowing much in terms of driving hybrids and not using ECO mode I was able to achieve the 38.4. I don't want to put too much into a first trip, but this is promising. Coming from a Buick LaCrosse averaging 20.4 mpg and driving in excess of 25,000 miles per year this is really going to pay for itself. I am short on time tonight, but would be happy to answer any questions when I can.

On my first full tank the computer told me 40.x mpg average, but in reality I was 39.7 mpg based off of miles driven since the last fillup. Mind you this was in 30 degree temps before any grill blocking, something I hope to figure out soon once I get a scangauge...

How about some updates on your experiences? We are considering the Prius 4, Camry XLE (and Honda Civic).

I thin kthe Camry has the lead, wife likes the Honda. Prius is a great car, but to technologically obvious for her.

I have always liked the SE models. I had a 2004 SE Solara V6.

Can we get some updates on the MPGs you guys are getting? And whether or not you have LEs or XLEs? I'm very close to pulling the trigger on an XLE.
I am hopefully today gonna see that Mica grey color. I want tan leather, and my lady likes the grey, so the Mica grey might be the compromise that I really like the exterior, she'll maybe like it, AND I can get the tan leather interior.
Anyone seen or have that color? it looks promising in photos.

Its either that, or the red for me, and I was thinking something different as I have a burgundy red Trailblazer now.

I have a 2010 Prius we use a lot for long distance drives. Can someone compare how much softer and quieter the Camry is compare to the Prius? Prius is not a noisy car, but can get quite bumpy and it is noisy in the back. Since my wife is planning to sit with our baby in the backseat for the short term, we would like to upgrade our vehicles.

As much as I hate the Camry, the specs seem very impressive. If I can get a 5-10mpg for extra 50HP and more comfort, I might do it

hycam is like a lexus compared to prius, take a test drive. seats are more comfortable, much less road noise, roomier of course, smoother drivetrain, much more powerful and 40+ mpg to boot! what's not to like?:p

The gap is because the wife didn't grab mileage and receipt. Soooo mad :)

What bisco said. The TCH will feel like a Lexus compared to the Prius. It is much quieter and smoother, especially on the highway (though I get the tyre noise will depend on what type of LRR tyres they mount on the Camrys nowadays).
