The Cal State LA hydrogen station uses electrolysis and was established to try to lower the cost of electrolysis for small fueling stations. It is a good use of research dollars.

I guess that means the energy can be as clean or dirty as the energy for plug-ins. It takes about 55 kwh to make a kg of hydrogen. That is about 2.25 gallon equivalent of electricity to make a new mirai go 100 miles. That is the most efficient fuel cell vehicle sold today. The bigger on the inside tesla model Y and likely the future toyota bz4x BEV SUV can go about 280 miles on the same electricity. The Rav4 prime can go 210 miles on that electricity if you don't exceed its electric range (42 miles) between charging. That rav4 prime can travel the country, while a fuel cell vehicle can only go where there are hydrogen stations which is a very small part of the US.

Now the hydrogen lobbyist can say they will use renewable electricity for all of it in the future, but that means you need to build 3x more renewables than you would to power plug-ins plus the stations, electrolyzers, compressors, etc. Porsche is working on renewable gasoline ;-) so that could be used in a rav4 prime.

Medium range heavy duty trucks are a much better attempt. Stations just need to be built for some predefined routes.

It looks like with over a million deposits for bev pick up trucks - the ford f150 electric, tesla cybertruck, and rivian truck - there is a pretty big market. I'd like to see phev pick up trucks also. I don't see many of these potential customers prefering a fuel cell pick up.
