Fog Lights: Install [Retrofit] fog lights on 2010 Prius?

Bad news indeed. Reading through TIS, it looks like it goes thusly:

1. Remove steering wheel.
2. Remove Spiral Cable with Sensor Sub-assembly.
3. Remove Windshield Wiper Switch Assembly..
4. Remove Headlight Dimmer Switch Assembly.

When you finally get in there, it doesn't look too bad. But if the repair manual is right, it will require removing the steering wheel first

(a) Disconnect the connector.

(b) Using pliers, expand the clamp as shown in the illustration.

(c) While holding the clamp expanded, disengage the claw and remove the headlight dimmer switch assembly as shown in the illustration.

EDIT: Looks like the steering wheel puller tool is pretty conventional, at least based on the pictures. But you do of course have to mess with the airbag, not to mention the cruise control switch, wiper switch, steering wheel button harness, etc.

 

Special tool to pull steering wheel is nothing special. You can buy one at most auto parts chain store. I have one. However, I think going with the dash mounted switch is just simpler anyway you look at it.

Btw, the fog lamp assembly is also used in 2010 Lexus RX350. We had our lexus in for service and got the RX as a loner car, fully loaded with nav etc. Nice car. Apparently more Toyota and Lexus models are using this foglamps.

 

I think I might just pay the dealer an hour's labor to put in the new stalk switch for me... I really wanted that OEM look. Or maybe I'll work up the guts to remove the airbag. Pulling the steering wheel and switches doesn't scare me, but I've never removed an airbag before and they definitely scare me.

 

I've removed air bags before. Disconnect the battery, then pop out the wiring harnesses, and then they become fairly inert. Pay attentino to retorquing specs when reinstaling, and it is like any other part. I've never pulled a steering wheel before. I was hoping for a quick install. I do not have the entire procedure from the repair manual though. I will have to figure something out if I go this route.

 

thanks edward! I had a great time,we finished up in sanibel then disney! Prius did a fine job and the solar roof did well(when sunny). I am attaching the parts list again as it might be helpful to some who havent followed the entire post. Also, the connector needed for the fog lamps are part #82824-60460. Now, before ordering , wait till friday. My tech is near certain these are correct,as i mentioned earlier he made a couple connectors for my trip. The fog lamps worked perfectly(and indeed needed them in the mtns. On the way back thru ga. And chattanooga,tn. To recap, if you want factory fit and finish, buy all the parts listed below(attached file) and the above connectors(after confirmation on friday) everything is waiting and ready,the stalk from the v fits,the wiring all the way thru the ecu,fuse box,even the realy is there;however,you must run a wire to the fog lamps from the relay in the fuse box. I will post a diagram of where the relay is after i talk to the tech friday.he said three hours labor is more than enough to do the total job(i spent more but was the test subject). That includes the stalk,covers,wiring, everything.thanks again to hawkmoon for his guidance and in helping me put it all in perspective,i made a mountain out of a mole hill with this. Now , if i could only go back to sanibel..........

<= This was what I looked like when I saw a brown box sitting in front of my door when I arrived from the work.

Immediately opened up the box and now I am able to post pictures after kids went to bed.

The quality of kit isn't too bad, especially considering the price I paid, I am impressed. And best of all, the switch fits perfectly!

The wiring is all done and probably a direct plug in for Yaris model. That's where I need to modify but looks like all I need is hook up red/white to +12v either ignition switched or/and mainbeam switched etc. and ground 2 black wires. Relay and fuse is all wired as well as switch and foglight sall with matching harness. It can't be any easier than this.

Plus I compared the lamp unit to the genuine one installed on 2010 RX350 (same part) and exception of DOT letterings on the front lense, you can't really tell aftermarket from genuine part standing few feets away. Plust at little over $40 including shipping for the entire kit, I can't really complain much. However I can't really say much about the beam pattern at this time. And the instruction is useless as it's very generic not specific to the wiring included in this kit so you are on your own.

 

Wow! Thank you for doing that. Are the mounting brackets on that Yaris kit the same as the Prius? So can we just buy the Yaris kit and the two fog light shrouds for a Prius and be good to go?

Great news. I'm glad that the switch was the right size. Could you provide a link to the website that you ordered the kit from? Also, could you go into a little more detail on what the differences are from OEM (minor as they may be)?

Looks much like the stock switch in my wife's Suzuki.

 

Like CASUMIK was able to do, light assembly is a direct fit on Prius bumper. Once you remove the grey "ugly" cover, you will see holes to mount the lamps. Then you clip on the new trim piece from Toyota.

I went for cheapest price on ebay but few days later I even found a cheaper one. Cheaper by $3 at just $40.88 including free shipping. I don't know if it can get any cheaper than this...

Apparently these lights are manufactured by more then 1 company but most kits sold on ebay are probably all same in quality.

Kit is manufactured by ESUSE while mine is made by DLAA. Light housing looks little different.

I will get some more pictures and details on the quality comparison between OEM and aftermarket. May be I will try to wire it tonight.

Update on OEM trim cover. I was able to speak to the dealer and he said he will receive them on 9/4 so I should be receiving them by 9/6 or so.

 

Nice! I just bought a set off of the ebay link you sent. I was curious if you had any ideas for removing the factory empty fog light trim things? Would you go in from underneath the vehicle?

 

Just got mine in today and there are some differences. Just to refresh, I ordered this set:

The kit came from Conquest Auto and is manufactured by Winjet (China). Pictures to follow later when I get a few minutes. Key differences between this kit and the one described above by tjp74:

1. Switch in this kit does NOT fit cutout in Prius dash. The switch has two choices of bezel, neither of which fits Prius. Doesn't look like it would fit the Yaris, either. Not impressed.

2. These claim to be D.O.T. approved. The box, instead of fancy printed, is rather plain brown, just listing in big black print the part number, model, and "SAE D.O.T."

3. The lights themselves are heavy and appear to be of reasonably good quality. They look correct for the Gen III Prius, but I cannot confirm until my trim rings arrive. The lenses bear SAE D.O.T. lettering as well. However, one arrived broken (reflector loose inside), so either need better packaging or maybe not so good quality after all.

4. The harness is nicely put together, with good looking tape at the ends of the split loom. Similar to posted above, with relay, etc.

5. The lights appear to possible to be aimed by moving the reflector inside the housing with a screw on the back. However, the aiming mechanism provided the failure point for the broken one.

Overall, this might be the good option if you plan to use the factory stalk switch and want a set that claims to be D.O.T. approved. But do not plan to use the switch from this kit and inspect carefully on arrival. The eBay kit tjp74 documented appears to be the better choice, since it includes a usable switch and is less expensive. It is also possible that the Camry version of the one at Conquest auto includes the right switch - couldn't say since I didn't order it - but that one is also considerably more expensive than the eBay one and no reason to try it. Given the fact that one was broken on arrival and has an incorrect switch, I cannot make a recommendation. I'll post back my return/exchange experience with Conquest Auto for future reference.

 

if the low beams stay on when you use the high beams, how are you supposed to make them turn off, like I thought they were supposed to, when you put on the high beams?

I used to wire the relay to one of the low beam leads to trip the relay. When the highs went on, the lows went off, and so did the fogs.

When you flashed the lights with the stalk in my old Buick Reatta, if the headlights were off (and down), the fogs used to flash. If the headlights were up and on, the high beams flashed. That was cool.

 

It wasn't that long ago I was considering spending over 45 bucks just for that switch! Thanks for the info. Looks like the bottom line price is about 45 bucks for the lights and wiring, with factory like switch, and about 70 bucks for the oem covers, for a grand total of 115 bucks. Not bad.

Throw in another 100 bucks for a factory stalk if you insist on having it (and don't mind removing the stearing wheel), and you have 215 dollars for fog lights.

Then there is the installation. I suspect we'll have two how-to's. One for wiring with the switch, which will involve a lot of routing of the wires, and a second for connecting it up to the stalk switch, which will involve much less wiring, but would likely require removal of the stearing wheel.

The dealer I ordered the parts through said they are scheduled to arrive on 9/4. So it looks like I won't have any new information until at least a week after that.

That exact question is what makes me think the extra $90 and disassemble of the steering column is worth it to get the factory switch and relay setup.

 

You can check with after market alarm installers, but I seem to remember that it is fairly common for them to drill a small hole in or around the driver's side footwell. Usually just above the pedals. this get's you in the underside of the engine compartment. Just be sure to put in a rubber grommet before you pull a wire through it. If there are any pre-drilled holes or room to squeeze in another wire, I haven't seen it.

 

It's not uncommon to find find extra hole on the firewall to run the wires through. I've installed alarms in many cars and never had to drill a hole.

This is for Toyota Yaris. I expect to find one on Prius as well.
