To what extent do you and your friend apply auxiliary charging to the 12V battery?

Yes and likely comparable models. This is discussed fairly extensively near the beginning of the thread.

Neither battery has had charging from an outside source, verified by a call to my friend. I think the reason for the high under load voltage is probably due to the very low internal resistance of these batteries. The measurements were taken at the battery with a calibrated meter.

My millage is about the UK average of 12,000 miles since I retired the car being driven most days. When I was working it was typically 55,000 miles a year, but not all within the UK.

what would be the theoretical effect of running one of these batteries flat, then recharging? assuming you have not done that. that seems to be the weakness of the oem battery.

These batteries are designed to be discharged on a daily basis in there normal duty powering mobility buggies. The manufacturer suggests 1000 cycles to 80% discharge as the normal life span with occasional 100% discharge doing no harm. This is providing the battery receives a full charge as soon as possible (normally within 24 hours). This would be being the equivalent of discharged and charged daily for three years.
The batteries are also rated at a 10 hour discharge rate. A much more rigorous rate than the normal 20 hour rate most manufacturers use.
Most batteries are considered deeply discharged at 50% level.

The box that the battery came in gave the manufacture as a US company, but made in China. I may still have the box my friends battery came in if so I will post a picture.
If these batteries have a downside it is there weight 18kg against 11kg for the OEM, but the capacity of lead acid batteries is directly related to the amount of lead they contain.

The UK gen2 Prius did not have SKS, but the battery we have as OEM is the larger of the two batteries (45 ah) as fitted to US vehicles with SKS.

+1, I found a Duracell scooter battery at a Batteries Plus local to me on the internet, but it was $129. It would be great to find something in the sub $100 range. :)

I don't believe you can realistically find a good sub $100 battery in this class. The reason you would go this route is that they tolerate deep cycling and have a greater capacity. For these things you pay a price.
