I've seen the FIT.... This PRIUS has a MUCH larger trunk. If you don't need trunk space, then get the FIT... I think the PRIUS is more earth-friendly though.... :D

I can't compare the Prius to the Fit, but I can compare to the Scion xA, which is in the same class as the Fit.

Seating room is surprisingly similar, with two key differences: 1) in front, the space between the two seats is much narrower on the xA, and 2) the Prius can seat 3 adults in back with only mild discomfort, but butt-space on the xA is very very tight with 3.

You can stack 3 full sized luggage cases in the Prius without folding the rear seatback, it won't fit horizontally on the xA -- only 1 can fit upright.

We never get 31/38 mpg. It's more like 30 mpg in mixed commuting. Performance, though, is very similar.

You sound as if you've already answered your question. The reasons for buying a Prius and not buying something else can't always be quantified by things like cargo capacity, etc, etc. There are a lot of cars out there that will give you splendid service, good mileage and fun, and many of them cost less than a Prius.

Are you wondering if / hoping that someone on this forum will talk you into buying a Prius or give you some huge deciding piece of evidence?

One way to think about it is to try to imagine how you will feel about whatever you buy a year or two from now when the glitz has worn off and you are on a day to day basis with your car. Honda makes superb vehicles, so I doubt anyone here would try to talk you out of one on a reliability issue.

My sense is that you'd likely end up fault-finding the Prius after you got one because you were initially uncomfortable with the 10k additional cost and made a decision against your intuition. Better go with the Fit.

As far as the thread goes... why not compare the Fit to the Accord? As far as comparing the two cars for your own purchasing dilemma it's legit... but I don't think the comparison to the Prius is warranted in terms of I guess you could say cost comparisons to see if the Prius pays off:

"As a subcompact, the Fit is cute and small—but has over 90 cubic feet of passenger volume (only slightly less than the midsize Accord) and 21.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity, nearly as much room behind the rear seats as a Honda Element. The 60/40-split folding rear seats even allow the Fit to do some minor hauling. "

If you're trying to save money, buy a Fit. Hell, buy one anyway since it's a very nice car. The Prius has much better fuel efficiency, by at least 10 mpg real-world in most cases, and the electric mode is fun, but the car itself isn't really enjoyable to drive in my opinion, whereas I've heard many people say the Fit is. And the Fit is more comfortable and configurable.

So if you don't care about hybrid technology then go with a cheaper economy car.

Good point. I didn't realize it was slightly less than the midsize Accord. It's going to be very interesting to see how the Fit, "fits" into the market.

From a practical standpoint, the Fit looks really great. And I'm a very practical person. :)

What do you mean the Prius isn't fun to drive? I think all the cool gadgets and the touch screen will make it fun enough.

    More smug? I think so.

I like my Prius too, but some of you people are so arrogant and take yourselves so serious it makes me chuckle.

I agree - I think it's a lot of fun to drive. And even if it's not really "fun", it makes my driving experience overall much more enjoyable.

Going slow (60-70) doesn't bother me.
    Traffic doesn't bother me.
Spending an hour+ in the car getting to work doesn't bother me.

I just find it's completely enjoyable to be driving and getting 48-50mpg, listening to my ipod and just relaxing. Quite different from my previous driving in my Jeep. It was all about get there as fast as possible..

I use to own an automatic Fit Sport and I never got the mileage the dealer told me that people were getting. If you get a Fit make sure it is a stick shift or your mileage is really going to suck. I got angry at my Fit and my sons got bigger. Then the Prius V came out and hubby and kids loved all the room in the back seat. There is a ton of room in the back for my dog. So we have a Prius V
