Finally! How to program a non-SKS key/fob. Detailed!

We just purchased a 2007 prius and it came with one fob. We realized later that the fob only works by proximity. If it is in the dash slot, it doesn't work.

We are out of state from where we purchased the car.

Now my question is, can I program the fob to work in the dash without another fob?

To the best of my knowledge, no you can't. Whoever programmed yours did not program the fob for the slot. That's unfortunate.

 

Dang. So how would I be able to get a fob programmed? Would I have to bring it in somewhere? Or am I just out of luck?

The only way I know of is to bring it to the dealer or qualified locksmith. I'm sure they could do it but, I don't know how much it would cost.

My question to you is, how bad do you need the "non proximity" function to work. because if your key works via prox, you can program another key to work via prox (see this thread you would use Procedure B only How to Program a New Key Fob for Full SKS Functionality | PriusChat)

The only time you would need the non sks portion is if your fob battery died. If you have two fobs, that wouldn't be an issue.

 

You're right! I don't need it. Now that I think about it, especially if I program a second key.

So the whole process still works even though when the fob is in the dash the car won't start or recognize it?

To the best of my knowledge, it does. That's how your key got to where it is now, someone only did Procedure B and neglected Procedure A.

 

Wanted to report my experience. First USNavyStgc - I did exactly as you suggested using an old fob and a new one I got on ebay. Maybe 50 + times, since so many people said they just had to keep trying!

And, like many, everything worked up until step 9. At that point I decided to put in new batteries and just see if it made a difference, and it did. Things were definitely different. (As such, I highly recommend people not waste their time and don't even start this without 2 new batteries!).

With the new batteries I could get all the way through, and then on the last part of the last step I would get 2 lock/unlock sequences instead of one. Still, that was substantial, as everything would work except the auto-sensing. Ok, but I want the auto sensing.

So, figuring maybe you had it wrong, I tried a lot of the other variations out there. Here's the thing, one of those variations was enough to mess up the programming on my original FOB, so now neither of them had auto-sensing features. AS I DON'T RECOMMEND USING OTHER VARIATIONS THAN WHAT IS HERE! Especially one that changes the order of which FOB to use, hahahaha.

Well, as luck would have it, the day before I thought I was screwed and would have to go to the Prius store to get this all sorted out, we found the lost FOB. That lost FOB actually had a new battery in it, so 30 minutes before heading out to the dealer-stealer, I figured I would see if I couldn't program the now messed up old FOB and the new one I got on ebay.

Using your exact technique, I was able to successfully re-program both keys, one on the first try and one on the second.

I wish I could explain why this didn't work the first time around, but I was very happy that it ultimately worked out (and just in the nick of time)! Thank you.

 

Thank you Dancing Bear for your input and experience. Yeah, I am baffled at why people have problems with the procedure but, I'm telling you, I have personally executed the procedure with no variations and mine worked the first time. I think the advice about replacing the battery in the old fob is great advice.

I bough a smart key remote from the dealer, and it has a silver Toyota emblem on in. I tried the procedure for locking/unlocking..but it did not work. I then tried the standard procedure below for operating the car..and not it all works. It works in the slot, and the smart key works and I can unlock/lock the doors. The only difference with this smart key and my original one it that it locks itself after a short period of time after you get out of the car. I probably want to do that anyway! The dealer said my original key has a stuck panic button..and the alarm could go off by itself!

The Fob (for operating the car)
This isn't hard, as long as your new fob is not broken and you are able to follow simple directions. The whole process will take less than two minutes.

1. Insert old fob into slot and remove it 4 times in a row, then insert it a fifth time and leave it in.
2. Open and close driver door 6 times.
3. Remove old fob from slot. Car is in fob programming mode at this point.
4. Insert new fob and leave in the slot for a full minute. Watch the blinking red anti-theft light on the dashboard. When it stops flashing and goes dark, your new fob is all set.
5. Remove the new fob and you're done. You should test both fobs to be sure they work properly.

 

AWD, you have confused the crap out of me. Tell me if I got this right?

1) You bought a brand new fob, you tried the procedure (chicken dance) but it didn't work (this is likely due to the stuck button on your original fob)
2) You used the procedure in your post and now all functions of the fob work including sks? (not possible but the fob will work in the slot)
3) With your new fob, your car locks automatically after you've been out of the car for X amount of time????

Your procedure is basically a repeat of the procedure A in post #1 but that will not fully program a fob. The SKS functions still need to be programmed using procedure B. You will not be able to accomplish this with a stuck button on your original fob. You need to unstick the switch or replace it. I'm betting the lock button is the one that is stuck and that's what's causing your car to lock after X amount of time.

Pls let me know what's going on in more detail.

 

I bought a used fob from eBay and was able to successfully get it working to start the car but remote lock and unlock don't work. My Prius is base model non SKS and has the black key. I bought a chrome logo key. Is there any way to get it to work?

 

Hi i know this is a forum where a lot of US people come. But for you out there european people the trick also works for a non sks key ( B23TA ). i had to purchase a B23TA key (through E-BAY) from UK but it was OKAY. I had one small problem... for the programming of the DOOR LOCKS. WAIT 40 SECONDS AFTER STEP 11. thanks to you people to put this instructions online ;-)

If I have a silver fob and my car is SKS can I still program a black fob? What if I lose the silver fob, will I ever be able to program a silver fob again without a working silver fob?

 

Get a new silver fob from amazon for under $120 and program it yourself. If you lose the 2nd spare key, it can cost a $1000 to replace at a dealer

 

I did have to do the step 10 (above) twice. My Toyota dealer wanted $45 to cut a door key, but I got a blank on Ebay and the ACE Hardware cut a key for free!

 

This is the method I used to program my Black Logo Key FOB.. Worked Great!!!

It was lifted from Post #68 as I am a new member and cannot quote or link things yet..

Now on to the tough one (Door Locks):

Following are Directions that worked for me for programming for DOOR LOCKS (it was only when I followed steps 1-4 that I was able to get the car in programming mode for the Door Locks; Steps 1-11 are for "putting the vehicle in programming mode" and you use your old (working fob) for those steps. New fob is not used until step 12):

1. Sitting in car with all doors locked I manually unlocked the driver side door (do not open door until step 3).

2. Put Original/Old fob (the one that works) in ignition slot (do not push start)

3. Open driver door

4. Remove fob from slot

5. Insert and remove the fob from the ignition switch twice within 5 seconds (door is still open).

6. Within 40 seconds: Close and open driver's door twice.

7. Insert and remove the fob from the ignition slot (let beep twice before removing).

8. Within 40 seconds: Close and open driver's door twice.

9. Insert the fob into the ignition slot and close the driver's door.

10. Push Power button 3 times (Do NOT depress brake pedal)

11. Remove fob from ignition slot.
NOTE: System should now lock and unlock vehicle once, twice or five times to confirm that the system is in "Programming Mode". If locks do not cycle (lock/unlock) at least once, you need to start over.

12. Within 40 seconds, Press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously on the NEW fob for 2 seconds.

13. Within 3 seconds: Press remote transmitter LOCK button.
NOTE: System should now lock and unlock vehicle once to confirm registration:
A. If it does, just sit tight for 40 seconds, or open the driver door.
B. If it does not, try pressing and holding the Lock and Unlock buttons simultaneously for approx 1 second and then pressing the Lock Button within 2 seconds. You have roughly 40 seconds to re-try this final step by holding the two buttons for different amounts of time, as long as you were successful at getting the system into Programming Mode (locks cycled at end of step 11).

My experience was that the most time sensitive part of the process was the amount of time I that held the Lock and Unlock buttons down. When I held the two buttons down for 2 seconds it did not program; However when I immediately tried holding the two buttons down for 1 second (or less) it worked fine and the locks cycled when I pushed the lock button.

To exit programming mode, open driver's door

Got it in two days, went to my car at lunch, checked the moon phase, did my dance and IT WORKED! THANK YOU.

The only difference in my experience was I didn't hear the last lock/unlock confirmation, but the remote lock/unlock works fine as does everything else.....

We have been living with this slowly deteriorating FOB. But now I will dissect it, replace the switch and see if I can print a new case.....

im having problem from step 9 it did lock n unlocked but not getting but the fob not reponding i kept pressing the fob buttons but nothing happened do i need to press n hold the buttons or keep pressing it for 1.5 secs

Which procedure are you using (B or C)? Do you have a brand new fob (never used)? Did you replace the battery in the old fob? Did you try the alternate procedure? Did you practice the steps first?
