Seminal paper on optically mapped, 3d space
The success of autonomous driving is limited by the sensors, typically optically based, that map what is seen in front of the car. Both distance, direction, and the calculated relative velocities are critical to guiding a car to avoid other moving and stationary objects. So this paper describes an improved approach:
http://web.media.mit.edu/~achoo/beat/Kadambi_beat_lowres.pdf
Radar works by timing a reflected signal but the problem is sensor time resolution, they are too slow to achieve more than centimeter resolution. This paper outlines how to 'heterodyne' the transmitted and reflected light to achieve millimeter resolution. Better still, it appears to mitigate the fog problem.
There is a big gap between lab and product but the math and physics laid out here is the roadmap to improved, autonomous driving sensors (and others.) Ones that may not require mechanical sweeping of the field.

Volt future
Source: AD #2259 – GM Pulls the Plug on the Volt, ZF Uses Blockchain For Car Sharing, Can Tesla Hit Its Goals? – Autoline Daily
. . . The data house [Autoforecast rjw] says the Volt will go out of production in 2022 at GM’s Hamtramck plant in Detroit. It appears that instead, GM is going to put all its efforts behind its aggressive plan to intro 20 battery electric cars by 2023. Even though the Volt was completely redesigned last year and sales shot up 60%, it didn’t last. This year sales of the Volt are down over 12% and fell 33% last month. Looks like GM decided it was time to pull the plug on its plug-in.

Whether it’s good or bad, there’s no company in the auto industry right now that can grab headlines like Tesla. The company has struggled building the Model 3. At the same time, it’s introducing new products like the Roadster and a semi-truck. Tesla going for a mileage record
Source: Elon Musk shares Instagram photo of a Tesla atop a Falcon Heavy rocket - Business Insider
In a series of tweets on Dec. 1, SpaceX founder and tech billionaire Elon Musk said he planned to launch a Tesla electric car to Mars orbit in 2018.
Musk toyed with the popular press, first by confirming his plans with The Verge, then backpedaling the claim, then re-confirming it with Ars Technica and several other media outlets.
But if Musk has left any room for doubt, it is now gone with a...bwilson4web Dec 22, 2017 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 2,962 Likes: 6 Replies: 37 -
Toyota to electrify all models by 2025
The more auto makers who increase the number of electrified models, among other benefits, the more charging infrastructure that will be built benefiting Prime drivers. As battery technology continues to improve, the next Prime or whatever electrified car we get will have a battery that is smaller, lighter, greater capacity, maybe cost less.
Here's an article about a lithium battery breakthrough that increases range:

Insight III
Source: Honda Offers Some Insight | TheDetroitBureau.com
Honda as it gets ready to reveal a prototype version of its 2019 Insight model at next month’s North American International Auto Show.
. . .
For now, Honda isn’t saying much beyond promising it will take a “new approach” with the third-generation hybrid-electric vehicle, among other things opting for a conventional, albeit sleek and sexy design. It will also get a new, two-motor gas-electric drivetrain.
I'm not sure this is the best market for a hybrid but what is the alternative?

Nio China 200 mi EV
Perhaps our 'China hands' @hkmb and @tochatihu might explain why we see on chinese characters?
Source: Startup Nio to Launch Its First Electric Car for China - Caixin Global
The seven-seat Nio ES8 — which boasts a 70 kilowatt-hour battery pack that allows a driving range of 355 kilometers (221 miles) — will cost 448,000 yuan ($67,800), compared with 836,000 yuan for Tesla’s Model X. The ES8 is expected to hit the market in the first half of 2018.
. . . Nio has adopted a battery swap system, which will enable owners to swap their vehicles’ battery packs for fully charged packs in about three minutes at stations around the country. Nio plans to set up 1,100 such power-swap stations by 2020.

Prismatic batteries are the next big thing
Toyota and Panasonic are teaming up on batteries that Toyota itself and other automakers could use in future electric cars. Rather than building cylindrical batteries like the type that Tesla and other EV makers use, the two companies are exploring the development of "prismatic" cells. Those are square, flat batteries with aluminum housings and are typically used in cell phones. They can be made smaller and lighter than battery packs that use cylindrical cells, but tend to cost more and are vulnerable to overheating and swelling.
Toyota recently unveiled plans, working with Mazda and Suzuki, to launch a new lineup of EVs starting in around 2020.
Toyota and Panasonic won't have to deal with thorny issues like battery chemistry to make better prismatic cells, which are already used on the Bolt and other vehicles. Rather, they'll just have to use their engineering and research chops to refine them so that they're cheaper, safer and more reliable. The payoff could be longer-range,...pilotgrrl Dec 13, 2017 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 1,310 Likes: 1 Replies: 9 -

Top Gear 2 does an honest Tesla review
Source: Chris Harris Reviews Tesla Model S
If you’re Chris Harris, host of Top Gear and one of the most prolific motoring journalists working today, and you somehow haven’t reviewed the super quick Tesla Model S, you’re going to need to save face—like racing it against the incredible Porsche 911 R.
The Tesla Model S P100D came out over a year ago, and even then it was an update of the P90D, and even that was just the performance model of the original Model S. It’s been around for so many years, it’s already had a styling refresh. And yet Mr. Harris has only just now reviewed one.
