GPS use bad for your brain?
I recall coming back from the Tsawassen ferry terminal one time, battling my way through the labyrinth that is Richmond, decided to ask Garmin to get me home, North Coquitlam. Unfortunately, with dated map and road construction, it took me the long way, way east, ended up doubling-back across the Port Mann Bridge. Anyway, something in the news:
Study suggests reliance on GPS may reduce hippocampus function as we age

Seeks more drivers for mileage tax test
Source: State seeks more drivers for mileage tax test - Capital Bureau - East Oregonian
By Hillary Borrud Capital Bureau Published on October 4, 2015 8:04PM
SALEM — A state pilot program launched in July to charge Oregon drivers based on the amount they drive has roughly 900 participants, mostly in the Portland metropolitan area.
Officials had hoped to enroll up to 5,000 people in the pay-by-the-mile program, the first of its kind in the nation. Participants sign up with one of three private vendors, then install an electronic device that enables the company to track mileage and collect fees.
“I think we all need to get more (participants) in because the more we have, the better the data,” said Vicki Berger, chair of a task force overseeing the...bwilson4web May 13, 2016 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 1,111 Likes: 0 Replies: 3 -

Don Panoz and Delta Wing development
An hour long, still interesting insights about how to design efficiently:
This is the awesome motor: Charged EVs | EV-builder DeltaWing to use DHX motors with direct-winding heat exchange system
In effect, a liquid cooled, motor that allows much higher currents and power density.
In a Prius, these motors could shave almost 100 lbs but there is an even more effective approach. Encapsulate the stators in a non-conductive bath inside a jacket.
This would provide direct, heat conduction and increase the power density even further. With a pressurized coolant bath, it could leave the enclosing jacket and go through a phase change to efficiently...bwilson4web May 9, 2016 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 910 Likes: 0 Replies: 1 -
Canada Forest Fires Possible Gaso Impacts
The heart of the Canadian Oil sands (as far as living residences) is Fort McMurray which has sadly taken serious damage in the recent wild fires. Apparently a significant portion of the oil production is shut in for safety reasons. Bottom line analysts expecting a rough weeks ahead in the gasoline/crude prices.

Ferrari CEO Takes a Tesla For a Test Drive
Source: Ferrari CEO Takes a Tesla for a Test Drive
Electric cars are known for ferocious acceleration, and so are Ferraris. Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne took a Tesla for a spin, and acceleration aside, he found it wanting.
Indeed, he called it “obscene.”…
Context matters, of course. According to a CNN report, Marchionne called the experience – presumably in a Model S – “obscene” because there was no engine noise.

Hybrid Electric Buses in Wellington, New Zealand
The Tesla of Garbage Trucks Wants to Make City Buses More Sustainable - Curbed
"Wellington, New Zealand, had a serious issues with its beloved trolley system. Decades old, the vehicles rely on a system of overhead wires the city can’t afford to maintain, so it looked like municipal authorities would need to swap out the clean transport system for dirty diesel buses. But before the city revamped its mass transit system, a third way presented itself, a high-tech, more sustainable solution that may foreshadow a shift in how cities run their fleets of heavy vehicles, such as buses and garbage trucks....
The Wrightspeed hybrid system—an electric motor with extensive power and torque, a computer-controlled high-tech gear box and four-speed transmission, and a battery that’s charged by a gas-fueled turbine range extender called the Fulcrum—provides the push needed to move a heavy vehicle up hills... -

Survey: How many Prii are owned in CARB States?
I'll start this survey here and the Mods can move it if so desired.
Here is a simple survey trying to look at how many Prii are owned in US CARB states?
- The 10 so-called Extended CARB states are CA/MD/RI/ME/NJ/NY/CT/MA/VT/OR* where OR is not exactly same status, but these states all extend the hybrid battery warranty out to 10-yrs and 150,000 miles
- The 3 so-called Standard CARB states are DE/PA/WA and these states only get the standard 8-yr 100,000 mile warranty on the hybrid battery.
- New Mexico residents - hang on until we figure out if NM status has changed in 2016
The purpose of the survey is just general interest since HV Battery management is an important topic on Prius Chat, this gives us some... -

VW Snatches Global Sales Lead
File this in the folder, 'who s*cks less.'
Source: Despite Diesel Dilemma, VW Snatches Global Sales Lead from Toyota | TheDetroitBureau.com
Volkswagen says it was able to deliver 2.49 million vehicles during the first three months of 2016, a 0.8% year-over-year increase. Despite its diesel woes, sales surged 6.4% in the Chinese market, and it gained ground in the rest of Asia, as well as Europe.
But the German maker suffered a 5.7% dip in the U.S., and a 2.1% decline in all of North America. That’s actually not as bad as it could have been. Before the maker acknowledged rigging its diesels to illegally pass American emissions tests last September, those oil burners accounted for about a quarter of its U.S. sales. Hefty incentives have shifted many potential buyers to the brand’s gas models. Separately, economic woes in key markets like Brazil led to a...bwilson4web Apr 28, 2016 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 1,605 Likes: 1 Replies: 13 -

Regulators Cracking Down on Emissions Reporting Around the World
Source: Ford CEO Says Regulators Cracking Down on Emissions Reporting Around the World
In the wake of the Volkswagen and Mitsubishi emissions reporting scandals, regulators around the world are getting tougher on automakers with China leading the way, says Ford CEO Mark Fields.
China will be the most stringent about transparent compliance with fuel economy and greenhouse gas reporting by automakers “given some of the societal factors around air pollution,” he said. Fields spoke to reporters Saturday on the eve of the Beijing Auto Show, China’s biggest auto show.
A wave of events last week are getting automakers to pay more attention to the regulatory environment. Mitsubishi Motors admitted exaggerating the mpg of several minicar models in Japan, and that its testing methods have been out of compliance with Japanese standards since 2002. Volkswagen...bwilson4web Apr 26, 2016 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 853 Likes: 0 Replies: 3
