Hm, maybe the engine is forced to start to lubricate the engine. In the Liftback, the engine is always started for the warmup cycle, so this isn't an issue. I wonder if the engine still starts when switching to 'B' going downhill if it is already warmed up.

Actually, has anyone observed engine braking in Plug-in? If not, then more aggressive regen braking might have replaced engine braking in the Plug-in.

Once the engine is turning, it may use gas to go thru a warm up cycle.

Yes I have experienced engine braking in the mountains where the battery was fully charged from a lot of downhill. I don't remember it using any fuel.

So once the ICE is warmed up, B wont use any fuel? That sucks because that doesnt help me in my route. Many of my trips can be done on EV only except for this one big hill. I can avoid ICE kicking on when going up by going a slightly longer way but its out of the way. I guess Ill have to use that route both up and down.

Its out of the way, but uses less fuel. Uphill, curves, turns and stops really drain the battery. I have a similar situation with two big box stores in the same chain. One is closer, but uphill. The other is a flat run, but further. The flat run is all battery there and back.

DLee is right.. If I have a hill ahead of me, I'd rather extend the battery on the flats and save fuel there, and use fuel for the hill. However, the ICE will need to be warmed up if you plan on using it on the hill ahead of you. I plan accordingly.
