    Hi All,

I hope this doesn't seem like a dumb question but I'm new here. I just got my magnetic gray '06 package 7 about 3 weeks ago. I'm still learning everything I can about this new toy of mine so I've spent a lot of time reading all your posts, chiming in when I can. On the XM radio, I've read all the posts on initial cost and installation but nothing on monthly fees. Are there any? If so, how much and where's the best place to get service from?

    Thanks for your help!

If you are totally unfamiliar with the two satellite radio providers and their programming, my recommendation is that you sign up for their free trial online listening services. Then you can compare the programming on the stations that you'd listen to most frequently, and decide which service would be better for you.

Both Sirius and XM are about $13/mo for the first receiver and $7/mo for each additional receiver. If you sign up for a longer term you can get a discount - I'm paying $48 quarterly for two Sirius receivers. Your first year is often heavily discounted if your car has factory XM or Sirius. There are promo code always floating around for free activation too.

Do we have any confirmations that the new factory kit will work in a 2005 without jbl or nav? All installations I see mentioned here are 2006 models. Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I'm listening to XM online as I type!

If my car has the JBL stereo/navigation system (package #7), do I need to buy anything else or is everything I need already installed.

I just got mine installed at the dealer today, works awesome and looks identical to yours, in the same spot exactly, nice to know they're all on the same page with the installs. I was wondering why they didn't put it more in the corner so it would be less conspicuous, but it obviously has a special home in our Prius. My dealer was great and didn't charge me labor, just parts, as they have been trying to make good on a bad they did in the begining, and they have been very, very, good indeed!

So IS the JBL receiver required for the factory XM components to work? and does anyone have a photo of the factory receiver (AM/FM/CD) that comes with the package 3 2005 Prius? I'm trying to figure out if the XM components will conflict with the DICE iPod solution (no, I don't want to use the AUX for XM).

    Thanks in advance.

The Factory XM solution is compatible with the 2006 Pkg 3. My dealer has ordered the kit and receiver for my Pkg 3.

One issue you need to check though is the DICE iPod solution. It may be incompatible with the XM. I believe they plug into the same connector in the back of the radio. I know that the Vais interface has a pass through connector in their cable to allow another device (like the XM receiver) to be plugged in at the same time. You will have to check with DICE.

If you chose the Vais interface for Sat Radio, you would have a Aux In for any device plus an interface for the XM Direct receiver. THe XM Direct would be controlled through the MFD. The other Aux In would be used with your ipod. It will be AUDIO ONLY for the ipod and you would control the ipod with the ipod's controls, not the Prius built in controls and the MFD (except for audio volume).

If you choose Vais, you can use both their ipod Interface and their Sat Radio Interface at the same time giving you full control of an ipod and XM radio with a XM Direct. This is very nice, but the most expensive.

I know you do not want to use Aux In for Sat Radio, but there are some reasonable solutions. The Vais Interface for ipod allows full control of the ipod through the Prius Controls and the MFD. It has a second input for AUX from a second audio source like a Sat Radio. If you choose a Single DIN sized sat radio you can mount that radio in the space beneath the Radio behind the flip down door. The XM Commander can fit there and you would control it with it's controal or it's remote. It has a built in display. The Sirius GTR steamer and the Starmate Replay have a Single DIN installation kit that allows the same thing..

My personal solution will be the Toyota XM kit and interface the ipos (or other mp3 player like my Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS or my Treo Cell Phone) with the Aux In in the center console....

    Good Luck.

I'm sorry, but I did not completly answer your question. I misread your model year as I only read Package 3 the first time...

I have read one report of the Toyota XM kit working with the 2005.

However, If I had a 2005, I would get the Vais Interface for XM radio and an XM Direct receiver. The reason why is that it would also have a second Aux In for use with any mp3 player. This setup also will give you a full 16 characters of text display.

Note the new Toyota receiver also displays 16 charaters...

I bought my car on Saturday and paid $299 + $150 for install to get the XM kit installed. They installed it today, it took them 3 hours and a couple minutes to do so. What's weird is that my antennae is installed on the driver's side instead of the passenger like everyone else seems to have had done. I had a tough time ordering it as both the finance manager and the salesmen said they only do Sirus and don't have any factory option for sat on the Prius. But the parts guy figured it out. .

I paid $159 for the tuner and $80 for the prius fit kit from Camelback toyota in phoenix mention the motor trend 20 percent discount. My dealer charged me $157 to install but the prices for this are all over the place. I do notice with the antenna being on the right side of the dash under the windshield that it drops alot more stations because of trees etc much more than my honda accord. Has anyone figured out how to get to the diagnostic screen and find the "override" button on the 2006 navigation system. The procedure described previously works fine on my friends 2005 but not on my 2006. Thanks

Does anyone have a PDF of the Toyota install instructions? I'm hoping there's an easier way than total dash disassembly.

I would like to report that I had the Toyota XM installed in my 2006 Package 3 Prius today. It works perfectly. 16 characters, no drop outs with the DASH installation of the antenna, great sound.

My only complaint with the receiver is the display of channels. When you use the tuning know, it does change channels and the new channel is displayed at the top of the screen.

I just wish it would put a list of all the channels, of each type, and when you use the tunning knob it highlighs the selected channel. The XM2Go units do this and it is very nice.

Otherwise, It is a very nice installation and the integration makes it very easy to use.

I bought the old XM (from Coastal) that only displays 10 characters for my '05.

Would installing this "factory" version be as simple as buying the new receiver, unplugging the old one, and plugging in the new one? Or is there a different wiring and harness setup for this new receiver?

The extra 6 characters are not worth having to take apart my dash, disconnect that wire, and try to fit my big ole ham hock hands back behind that radio again... Took me over an hour, and my hand was killing me, trying to fit it into that little space.

Oh, and those pictures of the MFD screen... Is that what the '06 screen looks like (the black/orange looking color scheme)? I haven't seen any '06s; those colors and screen style are really great. Now that would be a great mod... Being able to fully customize the text/font/color...

    Thanks.

Yes the Orange black is one of the two standard color schemes for the 2006. Green/black is the other. The graphics are also "updated".

I actually prefer the blue color and graphics from the 2004/2006. The 2006 does not have as many choices as the 2004/2005.

I do not think it is possible to "upgrade" the software of the 2005.

It is not worth the time and money retrofitting the newer radio. The location for installation of the receiver is under the right rear seat. The Coastal, or Factory Interactive kits installed behind the rear quarter panel.

If your radio failed, then the newer radio should fit in the same location and should use the same cables. You may need an adapter for the antenna however. The newer radio uses a single smb connection, the older radio uses a double wire system (one for FM repeater, one for the satelite). There are adapters to change from double to single....

Is anyone in Northern California having luck finding a dealer that can order the XM Radio and install kit? My dealer insists it is still not available for the 2006 Prius.

    Just an update...

Stevens Creek Toyota claims to have the parts, but when I asked the service guys they claim the antenna is not installed on the dash and is instead installed on the roof? They also said it would take at least 2 hours, probably more.

Does anyone have any experience with a Northern California dealer doing the install? Has anyone done this themselves? If so, where did you buy the parts?
