Extended warranty ... Is it worth it?

I have decided not to do it this time since the payback is around 20%.

 

For my 2007 Prius I purchased a Platinum plus Toyotacare extended warranty. It (unfortunately) doesn't seem to extend the warranty on the hybrid battery (which is my present problem). I used it once to replace the catalytic converter on the car which would have otherwise been a costly repair. Its just insurance really. If you like insurance you'll like extended warranties. Yes of course they make money on them but there are actuaries looking at repair histories of vehicles and chances are you will lose money on an extended warranty (you won't need it). Or you MAY be one of the ones like me who happened to be glad he purchased it. I paid I think $400 or so for it.

 

If you paid $400 for the OEM warranty, then you got a great deal....great enough that it would be the exception to my #NeverWarranty rule.

 

Unfortunately they are over $1000 and as high as 2K. Not a good investment at those prices.

 

I got it. 7 years for $1750. I debated it, but after going through a lot of repairs on our last vehicle the peace of mind will be nice. plus, with it being the first model of a new gen any issues are not known yet, so in my mind there is a greater risk.

What exactly did you get?

 

Toyota care platinum I think. I'll have to look at the pamphlet in the morning. It covers almost everything.

USAA has a killer warranty but you have to be a member.

Also read the fine print as in most if not all the Hybrid battery is not covered.

How many miles is it for and did you get additional oil changes?

7 years or 100,000 miles. In California the battery is under warranty for 10 years. I'm not a usaa member and I had to work it into my loan so I'm fine with it. I have a friend at the dealership so they gave me a little bit of a break. Their asking price is 2500. What's the deal usaa offers?

So I got a quote from a MI dealer for $2040 for the 10/125 platinum real deal from Toyota. Still on the fence as these have been worthless in the past due to Prius reliability and Prius being generous on recalls.
Seems the main exclusion is the drive battery which has a 100K warranty from the factory.
