EV range in real world?

UPDATE: Have a look at my last two posts.
I did the exact same thing today (a week later -- same time, same route, same everything) and this time, instead of 26.1...
I got: 26.7
(slightly better).
So both times I got in the "26" range (26.1 before, 26.7 this time).

 

Most Prius tires are rate to 50Lbs - & that's what we run at - allowing 3Lbs for warming/expansion . . . . because hard tires not only decrease the likelihood of hydroplaning, they'll boost poor mpg/range issues. Radials will wear just fine - although many remember old bias style tires that would prematurely wear in the center when inflated upwards. The 'recommended' inflation is merely more for comfort, than anything else. Give it a try!

I run mine at 55lbs, get 106 mpg thru assorted Mountainous terrain. Oh, I drive 55mph on I 80. Mpg calculated at the gas pump.

Ty I tend always to go to the last page. But, did the OP freely admit to speeding around the S Cal Interstates?
Getting the whole story truthfully would speed up innocent problems. then we wouldn’t need 6-10 pages.

 

yes, i think he finally realized that the epa does not test at all highway speeds, never mind 80 mph.

 

I would love to see data around MPG vs. inflation...As well as hydroplaning vs. inflation or even comfort vs. inflation.
I have not bothered to collect anything that can be quantified well myself but over the past 14+ years of driving a variety of Prii, I have settled in on running at about 38-40lbs of pressure. I have not noticed improvement in MPG when I have tried higher pressures and I have definitely noticed a decrease in comfort and what I believe is road stability when I've used higher pressures.

I'll freely admit these are not blind studies and I could easily be feeling what I expected rather than anything actual.
BUT, I ask myself why push this if I can't see or feel anything positive...

 

My '24 Prime started showing mid-40 miles per full traction battery. Gradually climbed to 57 miles/charge.
Two days ago it jumped to 62 miles (distance to empty) on battery alone! What could have caused that?

The two times I have tested I got 48 miles and 52 miles on full battery (very different driving conditions).

 

Being that you're in Taos NM, hills (regen) and very little HVAC load this time of year. I've gotten my '21 Escape PHEV to register 60 miles with HVAC off, keeping speeds under 35mph and trying for max regen.


They don't call 'em "guess-o-meters" for nuthin'.

 

Battery capacity has a strong relationship with temperature. Too cold is bad and too hot too. It needs to be 'just right,'

Anymore, I don't care has there is an abundance of EV chargers locally and along my long distance routes.

I guessed how far the Gen 4 Prime would go in EV mode at 84 MPH - 5 or 6 years ago. My guess was somewhere between 10 and 15 miles. Thanks for confirming, even at this late a date.
The Prime can go a lot further than 17 miles in EV, it just wouldn't go much further than what you are seeing at 80 mph.

Only other stat that might be interesting to know for giggles sake is the battery temps as soon as the car is in Ready and the difference after going 17 EV miles at 80 mph. My guess is somewhere between 10 F and 20 F higher after running out of EV, with all other things being ( normal ).

 

this matter just came home to roost for us. One of our two plugins that has logged the highest mileage ... & nearing 70k miles (/w ~7 yrs battery usage) has 14.4kwh usable when new. 2 summers ago, it recorded that it still has 14.0kWh. But with our frosty 21°f autumn this haloween - it only registered 13.6kwh ... nearly ½ kWh less capacity from when previously tested.
Very disturbing, but then realizing that cold Temps reduce capacity, it was sort of a relief.
