Featured EV charging shortage in NYC (insideevs article)

    Waffle House with a row of L2 chargers butt-ended with CCS-1/NACS fast DC chargers on the far side of the parking area. Each charging station aligned with parking lane lines. Free charging if less than 20 minutes with a receipt code for over $10.

    I was hoping for a higher-end restaurant than that. I'm not sure that one would benefit from the lack of a petroleum smell. For big city, apartment dwellers, someplace they would want to go to every week. Chargers on the near side of the parking lot, and plenty of them.

    Really need mass Level 2 chargers for apartment residents. UK has ones that install on the curb. Lower cost long term than fast DC chargers everywhere.

    Unless ‘higher-end’ still gives a 20-30 minute dining experience, DC fast charging wouldn’t be a good fit.
    Level 2 chargers would work great in that case. And I would definitely give them my business (even if I never use the chargers).

    One of the issues mentioned (but not particularly highlighted) in that article is that the rideshare drivers have a laser focus on using chargers that are not a side benefit of paid parking. Presumably this is because the parking fee is much higher than whatever they're paying for the charge.

    So it's not just a "not enough chargers" issue, but also a land use situation. Parking (just parking, no charge access) is generally around $30/hr ---> $50/24hrs in garages in high-traffic neighborhoods where rideshare drivers would get a lot of revenue. It's clear that rideshare operators can't handle that hit.

    Beyond that, there's literally no room for a queue of not-yet-paying customers in those areas. Not enough room until you get way out to the edges of the city such as the Coney Island or JFK airport locations listed in the article.

    I've visited the approval staff offices, testified before the county board in a zoning case, negotiated with a 600 unit developer. It does seem easier. And the staff has been helpful in all cases. You are right though, it is easier and closer to the people than in big cities.

    I know a Lowes that has a row of at least 15 free level 2 chargers on one side of the building in the parking lot. I have only seen myself using one. Most appear never used and the sun is getting to the plastic a bit.
    An hour at Lowes is not hard to do if I get in the tool section, half a charge. It means no gas used on the trip to Lowes. Another example of how ev can be wonderful to use in suburbia, even without 500 miles of range.

    Public Level 2 can help with the land use issue. There are several options for units that work with existing parking in residential areas. Also will keep those without overnight charging access off the fast DC chargers.

    There is also the benefit of an established process in place. Plus, a gas station site doesn't utility upgrades in most locations. Sounds like power companies aren't prepared to make the upgrades to for a DC charge station at a fast rate. Previously, they only had to deal with a few such upgrades in industrial areas. Parts may also be an issue. It's going to be half a year between My solar panel install and the utility puts in the bi-directional meter.

    Ah man, I hear that. My array is up and next week (weather permitting) they'll finish the aerial run to get the output to my house. Still waiting for the utility to upgrade my transformer.

    There was no mention of a meter change, but they put in a very modern unit about 3 years ago so I'm going with the idea that it can already read both directions.

    You're PPL over there, right? I'm in met-ed territory.

    Actually, the township is the utility company. Once upon a time they even ran a power plant. I think part of the issue is that the big utility companies are getting priority for the meters. They did let me turn the system on. I'm just not getting credit for excess for excess put into the grid.

    What about 50kW stations? Cheaper to install and still a partial or full charge in 30-60 minutes.
