    please check out the information at http://john1701a.com for basic information on how the hybrid system in the Prius works...it will safe a lot of your questions and fill you in quite well on the basics of the system. Basicly though, the battery is kept in a SOC b/w 40-80% and is happiest at ~50-60% infrequently going outside that range. This helps preserve the battery life. It is charged both via the regenerative system when you coast or brake, but it is also charged via MG1 by the ICE.

    Let's go with a "no" for the external charging question....it's not quite a 'no', but the explaination would be far beyond your ability to understand with your current understanding of the HSD system. But there is no practical way to externally charge the battery. There are a handful of external chargers owned by Toyota, they're very slow and will only put a tiny charge in the battery...basicly enough to allow the hybrid system to start up so the car can do the rest of the work.
