    Good thing earthquakes are not triggered by the Sun and Moon being aligned. The Moon being relatively closer and . . .

    HOLY CARP! I'm going close to New Madrid to view the eclipse and the wrong side of the Mississippi.

    New Madrid fault has stood up to many sun/moon alignments since it had a big slip. So probably OK. But it would be notable to have both together eh?

    NJ/NY earthquake was M 4.8 Taiwan was M 7.4 or 7.2 according to different sources. Each unit of magnitude increase corresponds to 32 times more energy release. Almost 5 and larger than 7 seem like very similar numbers, but as exponentials, they are not.

    M4.8? Sit back and enjoy the brief ride. If you even notice it, instead of mistaking it for the cat jumping up on the bed.

    Cracked sidewalk? On a national TV news report, a brief view of a sidewalk crack blamed on this earthquake, looked already well weather instead of fresh. Though the clip was very brief.

    Elsewhere we discuss the rise of China as global supplier of EVs (not to US though) and Baltimore's temporary outage as a vehicle import port.

    China EVs go to Europe instead. Subsequently may also go to other non-US destinations. Marine transport is by vessels called 'Ro-Ro' roll on (and) roll off. Ports can accommodate Ro-Ro with less infrastructure than for container shipping. Seems obvious yes? So I finally reach my point:

    China's EV Boom Has Increased Demand for Cargo Ships - InsideHook

    Where one may find hints about the future of transportation vehicle transportation.

    Global coral bleaching events have been in recent news. It was hot water in 2023. Class begins:cry:

    Corals are animals kinda like starfish. You are supposed to call those sea stars now. Anyway, corals take calcium and magnesium and carbonate from seawater to construct themselves. Food comes from filter-feeding polyps collecting what amounts to micro-poop from whatever. More food energy comes from algae that live inside corals and do photosynthesis. Corals also provide nurseries and homes for many species of fish, some of which humans eat.

    Coral bleaching occurs when water is too hot for too long. Corals expel their algae, or algae just take their own leave, not sure that's solidly known. Such corals may die and this is the news. Geographically wide coral bleaching is the news.

    So are we all gon na die or what? Class continues. Corals resembling modern ones have been around for 220 million years. Maybe longer, but the veil of paleo history remains only partially opened. During that time, earth (including oceans) have suffered many adverse events. One was when Chicxulub found itself under a large impactor about 66 million years ago. Along with damage to terrestrial life (as you know), it was big trouble for marine life.

    About 56 million years ago came Paleocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). Apparently, too many volcanoes put too much CO2 into atmosphere at same time, and it got hot hot hot. Most corals then must have had bleaching events much worse than 2023.

    But here's the thing. Corals after Chicxulub got good again globally after a few million years. Corals after PETM got good again globally after a few million years. Interestingly some of that recovery has been found in limestone blocks used to construct Mayan temples at Palanque; really close to Chicxulub's 'planetary reset'.

    ==
    If you read that current hot oceans might bleach/kill off corals, that's both right and wrong. More importantly, it misses the point. Humans need protein in part from marine sources and (coral) fishes may under-supply for decades or centuries. 'Farm' fishes in cooler water, and such places are well known from other research. Focus.

    ==
    Humans have made large CO2 addition to atmosphere for energy supply. It has led to more advances than I could briefly describe. At some time later, humans will rationally conclude that different energy supplies without more CO2 addition will be better for us. We may already have got to 10% of thinking that way. Moving slower could cause more harm than moving faster, but you are only reading words written by one person without agency. Inform yourselves.

    As you do, maybe see that things like global coral bleaching call for attention/clicks, but might not be of highest importance.

    ==
    Three million years after now I have no doubt that corals and their hosted fish will be doing great. More concerned about us.

    In about 12 hrs, NASA/Boeing/Atlas will send 2 veteran astronauts to ISS. After some time there they will make first crewed Starliner re entry. Behind an improved heatshield converting kinetic energy of (that mass and) orbital velocity to hot hot hot.

    Starliner will then compete with Spacex dragon as domestic transport to/from earth orbit. It has higher goals, returning from moon, which will bring a lot more kinetic energy. Because V gets squared :eek:

    But one step at a time and we extend all best wishes to Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams especially during the exciting up and down. Where there's two wils, there's a way.

    Yes that was original.

    edit: heatshield auto links to PriusChat Shop. Whodathunkit? Good luck buying one of those.

    Read this - & thinking it must have been written before Russia started messing with the fuel spicket - pre Ukraine attack. Then went back & saw the date was pretty recent. Vulnerability must have made them reluctant to be so ahead of the game with large amounts of renewables - when/if there's a likelihood natural gas may go away.
    Nuke fuel ain't dead yet.

    I have no problem with it, and consider it the lesser evil when comparing to coal.

    The anti nuke stance of German environmental movements goes way back though. While it meant keeping coal around over nuclear, they also got this (from link), "That, in turn, turbocharged the national deployment of renewables, which ballooned from 6.3 percent of gross domestic electricity consumption in 2000 to 51.8 percent in 2023.

    These figures are all the more remarkable given the contributions of ordinary citizens. In 2019, they owned fully 40.4 percent (and over 50 percent in the early 2010s) of Germany’s total installed renewable power generation capacity, whether through community wind energy cooperatives, farm-based biogas installations, or household rooftop solar."

    Using another of the Russian RD-180 engines. I hear the Blue Origin engine testing going on at Marshall Space Flight Center.

    About re-entry heat, it is compression heating, not friction or any other nonsense claims. This is why the Space X, first stage re-entry burn works. The incredibly hot engine exhaust pointed in the re-entry direction pushes the damaging hot, compressed atmosphere away from the first stage. For a detailed analysis, Google Boyles Law.

    Flooding and tornadoes are the thing now in northern hemisphere. A few months later it will be droughts and fires. A few months after that, the southern hemisphere will hit news again. Is any of this certainly due to climate change? Probably, but to get the idea requires looking at probability distribution functions. Few would.

    Can all of this be attributed to evil forces dedicated to destroying fossil-fuel industry? This notion is simpler to grasp, and offered by media available to all.

    Were I sure of how much of each should be in the mix, I still would not say because y'all got brains. Use them. 'Follow the money' gets a lot of airplay as it ought. 'Follow the concordance of evidence' is a quieter song.

    All media says whatever they say to get your clicks. Some media reaches further to compel you to think thus and such without strong evidence. OMG, figure it out for yourselves! Let not any PriusChat voice (however dedicated) or any other (however sparkly and distracting) allow you to not think and only follow.

    Funny you mentioned this. Earlier this evening I shared my cost to visit the "May the 4th be with you" at Munro in Auburn Hills MI:

    This is what it cost, not counting incidental meals, for 6 hours at Munro & Associates.

    Anyone seen aurora borealis in recent days? Sun has been throwing a lot of protons thisaway.
