OK, so what do you get at 55 MPH without the PHEV kit?

You really need to do some baseline testing without the kit before your PHEV data will be useful. If you only get 50 MPG at 55 MPH, there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with your car. Your test results will then be understated. Do us all a favor. Do your 55 MPH test over again WITHOUT the PHEV kit turned on. Report those results so we can better understand your results with the PHEV kit.

 

The 2008 Prius is mechanically identical to the 2004. The EPA ratings changed in 2008 because the EPA changed thier test. Not because the 2008 performs differently than the earlier models.

 

While I agree that doing the same route without the PHEV will be helpful, not everyone is as skilled of a Prius driver as you krousdb. The mileage you have gotten isn't anywhere near anything I have ever seen.

There are so many variables that affect mileage:

Tire pressure
AC
Windows open over 35mph

and most importantly is the drivers skill at maximizing the abilities of a Prius.

My partner gets 20% less mpg than I do on a regular basis. Prior to getting the PHEV installed I could have a nice 45mpg average going and in one trip he will drop it down to 35-37.

Since you seem to be an extremely skilled Prius driver I think you will have no problem adding 40%+ to your current MPG averages.

I agree that different drivers will get different results. But in this particular case, setting the Cruise Control to 55 MPH, should not yield drastically different results.

In the mean time, I am the one enjoyingopcorn: the reports that yourself and Joanna are providing. I am only in a position to sit on the sidelines for then next week or so.

 

IMHO, Yes. You can see much better in what the Car is doing. Like you, the Hymotion does not have a user interface for the pack. There is also a Scanguage for Dummies thread over at CleanMPG. I need to go back and see if I can display fuel usage in thousands of a gallon.

So you drove for 21 miles, for one hour. So a 21 mph average? What was your MPG for the entire 21 miles?

 

Where are all the other Enginer kit buyers? My wife wants to hear from you before she let's me jump in.

 

We are all waiting for our stuff to arrive. Mine showed up yesterday but I'm supposed to be on vacation so it will have to wait.

Thanks for doing the baseline at 55 MPH. Now the 78MPG with PHEV is in it's proper context. It is safe to say that at 55MPH, the Enginer PHEV will provide a 20% improvement.

 

My kit is due to be installed tomorrow. I'll be posting results here as I get them.

 

Bear in mind that calculating mileage improvement as (mpg2-mpg1)/mpg1 is kind of misleading. For example in the case of 65.1mpg vs. 78mpg, you could indeed travel 20% farther on the same amount of gas. However, most people are going to drive a fixed distance (per trip, per week, per year etc) and are interested in how much gas they will save. In this case you really need to compute the improvement in fuel consumption (gal/mile) rather than mpg. For the same case we now get ((1/65.1)-(1/78))/(1/65.1) = 16.5% reduction in fuel consumption.

As has been discussed in many topics, this is the reason why most of the world measures vehicle fuel consumption (litres/100km for example) instead of MPGs (or KmPGs).

Not trying to harsh on your buzz, 78mpg is still very cool!
