Enginer PHEV Technical Information

I tripped some codes again. Cleared them this time by disconnecting the negative lead on the 12V battery.

 

Oh and Jack is sending me a 16 cell balancer! Whoo!

 

I have just received today my 4kwh kit from Jack and I have to say I am very glad to have the 16 cell balancer, I have connected everything up and on my first charge and already 0.06v between highest and lowest cells. Can't wait to have it up and running. I hope yours works as well

Well i hope you get some better weather, at least when i installed at -3 in december it was dry!

 

All installed and all went well, but the next day I did get a couple of glitches including a red dash triangle but no codes on the scan-gauge and I am convinced it is due to harmonic noise from the inverter, this also makes radio reception erratic. I have rewired the ferrite which helped but I have another idea I will post on if works.

 

Quick update for all interested, the red light turned out to be due to me installing the kit with brackets insulated with rubber pads and not being earthed properly. If you don't bolt down, install an extra earth strap and make sure your brackets could hold the kit down in the case of an accident.

 

So, I recall seeing that Lithium Ion batteries should not be charged when they are below something like 35 degrees Fahrenheit. (I am not 100% clear on the temperature, but it was not a number that was all that unusual during Cleveland winters)

What are folks doing to charge their Engineer PHEV equipped cars in the winter time?

I haven't seen mention of this, so there must be a simple option. (I do not currently have a heated garage space for my C).

I can't speak for other Enginer users, but for me, I had two options:
1. Remove the batteries during the dead of winter since they weren't usable at those temps and were just plain dead weight, or
2. Since I had room in the battery case (2KWH unit), I put two 40W lightbulbs in there and plugged them in each night. this kept the battery pack warm enough to be able to charge and use.
