Engine, fuel system cleaning?

    Why not just use high quality oil, which will ensure the cleanliness of the engine?

    Use E10 fuel and the injectors will continuously get all the cleaning they need.

    My Prius has been sluggish so I would like to check/clean the MAF sensor since it sounds like it's easy to get to. ANy pictures and instruction on how to do this? Thanks.

    I don't think I would do it unless it threw a code or gave some symptoms that it was dirty or bad.

    There is a lot of information on You Tube try a Google search on cleaning MAF sensor or something like that. You probably won't find a video for a Prius but they seem to be pretty much the same from car to car, you will get the idea. Pretty easy job, CRC makes a good Mass Airflow sensor cleaner that comes in a spray can. If cleaning it doesn't help you can replace it, a new one is in the range of $40 to $100 depending on where you buy it.

    A popular 30,000 mile maintenance item recommended by many on PriusChat is a transmission fluid replacement, which should cost about $100 to $125 parts & labor. Be sure they use genuine Toyota transmission fluid.

    I wouldn't recommend fuel additives or throttle body cleaning on "do it yourself er" since you can throw a check engine light if you spray throttle body cleaning into the throttle body, which can be harmful for your Prius since it is a sensitive vehicle.

    As for the 30k service, I assume they just replace your engine and cabin air filters, rotate your tires, 25 point inspections or whatever inspection is listen in their service, oil change and front and rear brakes pads measurements. Nothing more and nothing less.

    I know since I used to work at Toyota... :)

    I had 2006 Prius and it detonating at very light load, especially in cruise. In heavy load with rich mixture it is running very good. I believe it is something to do with the 10% ethanol introduced in 2008 that caused lean mixture at highest timing advance 46 degree at around 1500 rpm. Because my Altima 2002 and Sienna 2004 also have similar problems, only at light load. I dump several bottles of Gumout regane and it does not fix it. Do you think it is a good idea to pour fuel system cleaner with high detergent every 60k miles or so? Recently all Toyota dealer recommend their fuel system cleaning service, but it was only dumping detergent to tank. They even advertised it in toyota website
    . Now I drove Toyota Auris hybrid which has identical powertrain as Prius 3rd gen. It is much more powerful than 2nd gen I used to drive and has no detonation at any load.

    Injector cleaner is NOT going to stop the predetination. It's a timing issue because of less gas.
    Retarding the timing can resolve that, but just about impossible with computer timing.
    You can try using a higher octane fuel, or different brand.

    I agree with you. The pre-detonation is running from lean mixtures of 10% ethanol. Putting premium fuels reduce it but price difference of 40c per gallons does not make sense. 2008-newer cars usually has no light load detonation problem with E10. For timing, I believe techstream or some advance scanner can advance or retards it about 3 degrees. I did it on my 2002 Altima with snap-on scanner. Retarding 3 degrees does not help because CVVT actually adjust timing dynamically and the severe 40 deg advance at about 1500 rpm still cause light detonation. Basically, just buy 2008 or newer cars.
