The incentive to buy SUVs may predate Bush, but Bush thought they were so great that he drastically increased the size of said loophole in 2003 along with his tax cuts. The 2003 economic recovery act basically allowed the super-rich to write off the entire cost of the biggest, baddest, gas guzzlers on the road. Talk about government waste!

I'm sorry, but it's a little bit tough to trust Bush on energy after he pushes such a huge whopper down our collective throats.

People have such short memories here in the US. 7 years ago, Bush campaigned that he was pro-CO2 reduction, and lambasted his opponents because they didn't run with an clear energy policy. Bush and Cheney, on the other hand, were both oil men, and would know what to do.

Flash forward 6 years, he hasn't done diddly squat about CO2 until this year, with a strong opposition party, the scientists of the world, and everybody else breathing down his neck... and his vaunted energy policy over the last 6 years amounted to nothing more than giving huge tax breaks to the oil companies during a time of soaring gas prices and record profits for Exxon and others.

SIGH. He's got to do a little more than pose for a photo op before he can take any credit for hybrid cars, electrics, or anything else. He's done a lot of damage through sheer negligence and broken promises over the last 6 years.

IMO waste is waste. The Republicans & Democrats are equally guilty. The first thing I heard out of the new Congressional leadership was "I need a bigger private plane." If they had to fly commercial you'd see a big improvement in airline quality and/or regulation. At least make them personally responsible for the actual cost less commercially available ticket. Government waste starts with the individual. <_<

    Classic misinformation campaign.

The "reader" (who will probably only look at the picture) will now assume Prius == plugin.
Also, the hybrid turned-into-an-EV is not qualified as that anywhere.

Although I am not even close to being a fan of "dubya", I do support the President flying an aircraft of the size of the VC-25's (A.K.A. Air Force One) The aircraft does more than fly one man around. The POTUS never goes anywhere alone, and the aircraft is much more than just a transport. It is actually acquiring capabilities at a rate that will almost make the "doomsday Plane" obsolete. Everything from calling a residense to running a war.

I agree that making a 150 mile hop in the VC-25 is a bit much, but one way or another a support aircraft of that size is near by in case of a national crisis. So you might just as well have it be with you anyways any time you can. Besides, I know from experience that the guys in the dark sun glasses get a bit testy if the President flies in something other than the VC-25's. B)

Clearly Bush is not the "green" President that many on this forum would like him to be. The man is a Republican, and generally speaking, Republicans are not known for placing environmental issues as a policy priority. In his limited defense, he did sign into law the bill permitting tax credits for purchasing hybrid cars which I think helped the Prius (and other hybrids) gain a share in the market that they might not have had without such a credit. In fact, I think these tax credits need to be reauthorized and expanded as we are starting to move into a new generation of hybrid technology.

As for members of Congress driving around in armored plated cars...I believe that only applies to the Speaker of the House, the President of the Senate, and maybe a couple others. A VAST majority of the other members get around in regular cars.
