Eco mode vs Power mode in the City: MPG stats

Thank you for clearing this up. I did mention that you should make sure the gas engine is stopped before putting it into neutral, but I didn't specify at what mph you can make the gas engine turn off even using CC. I think it's around 66 km/h or 41 mph.

When I read your first sentence, all I could think was that if you got better than 35 mpg, you were doing great (considering hills, short drive times, engine warmup etc).

Things to consider

1) 35+ mpg (given your commute) is great!
2) The MPG's are set by EPA tests, so the results are relative (they should be consistent between vehicles)
3) What were you driving before? What was its estimated EPA city? Why did you get MPG wise with it?
4) The only thing getting better gas mileage than you in the City are the cable cars!

 

my commute is 5.5 miles to go to work
and 5.8 miles to come home.

I take local streets.

eco mode: 44.2
pwr mode: 46.6

when I take the car to SF or Carmel, I can hit 46.8

I think I need to drive continuously on highway 5 to san diego/LA to see if I can ever hit 51+ mpg.

 

Hello everyone! New to the forum and the Prius world. I just got mine on Sunday and still breaking it in (trying to do everything the manual says). I thought it would be fun to test out the mpg. I know this can't be that accurate after 342 miles but if it is no more buyers remorse here...

Daily commute: 31 miles (23 hwy and 8 surface streets)

Eco mpg- 59.1 Avg mph- 44
Pwr mpg- 60 Avg mph- 46

I also reset trip A when there was 2 miles on the odo and after 342 miles the mpg is 47.6. That seems more accurate and still great. I just can't wait until I break it in fully and start using cc.

 

Just an update:

Those numbers were average , after 5000 miles.

But yesterday I reset the trip B monitor, and drove back and forth about 30 miles from San Jose, to San Mateo, and the mpg was
49.4

When driving at high speed, I felt ECO adding more to that number.

When driving at slow speed, I switch to PWR mode.

 

somewhat related to this post; as I said before, having a prius teach you to learn how to drive better, if you know or guesss traffic light will turn red, why need to speed?

for me, I get the most mpg if i am always at PWR mode.

AC on affects greatly the mpg. So I stop automatic AC, and use very low speed AC, avg mpg is 54mpg

in the winter months before, I was getting 62mpg

When at very slow speeds, and if having enough battery, you can press EV, and able to drive in EV mode up to 25mph
