    How you can come to that conclusion is beyond me. I've driven and owned many high performance vehicles in my lifetime and I find the Prius very enjoyable to drive. There are many different ways to enjoy a vehicle be it corner carving, quiet cruising, show-car looks, straight line wheels up launches, off-road adventures or video game mode hypermiling. To assume any other form of enjoyment is inferior to your preferred choice is arrogant or ignorant. The Prius and other max efficiency-based vehicles simply offer a different kind of enjoyment. One based on reducing oil consumption and reducing pollution your community has to breath. Some people, like myself, gain much satisfaction knowing they are reducing their impact and helping the local and global community even if only by a small margin.

    A true automotive enthusiast recognizes the diversity of vehicles on the road is a reflection of the diversity of ways people enjoy their cars, trucks or whatever. Your posts thus far would not lead me to believe you are a true enthusiast. Instead, you come across as a BMW fanboi or worse yet, a snob. I hope this is not the case.

    The primary pleasure in driving a Prius relies mostly in the ability to determine its fuel efficiency. If you don't care about whether you get 35 or 55 mpg there are better options out there in my opinion. You have to accept the compromise of slow acceleration and a 55-65 mph highway speed.

    The secondary pleasure is from the knowledge that your car is intelligent enough to stop its engine when it should.

    Then some people like the ideas of less pollution and less consumption of finite resources controlled by not-so-nice people.

    The truth is we should feel sorry for you Kos. Your ignorance aside, like all bullies, it’s quite obvious that you’re insecure and lacking something in his life. Except in this stage of adulthood, you can’t effectively bully when your claims are ludicrous and you’re talking behind a glass screen. Regardless, we as a Prius community certainly don’t take that crap.

    I’ve browsed through BMW forums before (bimmerforums, e46 fanatics, etc) and most members seem like even keeled, true car enthusiasts -- when one says something vile about the Prius, another member will renounce their statement. But you, kos, are probably the most bored and pathetic bimmer owner I know of.

    i'll tell you a bit about who i am so you can rest better. i am a bmw fan, a bmw enthusiast. i have restored them, moddified them, raced them and used them as a form of transport, i am an automotive enthusiast and have driven 1000's of different cars. i contribute to 3 automotive magazines one of which is distributed world wide and is on the shelves in your local wall mart, so i'd say i am in a position to speak as i find. me a snob, no. never, quite the opposite. if i was snob then i'd have objections to driving a £500 dog as a daily car as i have done in the past,i would have hidden it in the corner of the car park and not use it to take out a date. but nope i was more than happy to drive it with out a care in the world, people saw it as an "old bmw" but for me this was not a problem. if i were a snob i'd only drink and certain bars and socialise with people i think are of an equal to me however my friends are from all walks of life, different races, skin colour, race religion and up bringing. conclusions are up to you now


    driving pleasure, if your brain is the only part of your body that needs stimulation then the driving experience of a prius will tick that box, as you can sit there thinking "i'm saving the world".
    it lacks soul, its a form or transport. it has a character but similar to that of the nutty professor, its a geek if anything. the car does not communicate with you. we have the following senses, touch, smell, taste, sight hearing and a 6th sense which is you inner feeling. touch is where the car feeds back to you of what its doing on the road, smell, the fuel the engine the leather etc. sight, the way it looks, hearing is the noise (V8 hemi, bmw S88 or do you prefer the buzz of the 4 pot and electric motor) the 6th sence is a combination of all of the above which culminate in an overall experience. its lacks it, there is no enjoyment to be had. as some of the e30 BMW boys have said, they drive their old bmw's because they provide experiences that they enjoy. i'm sorry but no way can a prius give the experiences of driving pleasure in the traditional sense. if the new age pleasure is MPG and saving the world, then that's a sad thing.

    me a bully, no. i speak up for what i believe in. a forum is a public soap box to express thoughts. if people like me did not exist the world would be boring. but even to your face i would say the same thing

    a prius is boring, i'd never say its shit because it serves as a use to some people but thats it.

    i cant see there being a prius meet/show. god forbid if there ever was, that goes against your reasons for owning one as you'd waste fuel/energy getting there and the extra carbon foot print ( not only from he car but the BBQ's for the burgers) will contribute to killing the world



    right, i'm off to chop some rain forest trees down with this

    It has everything to do with it. For you, BMWs seem to be the best thing since sliced bread. You cite a whole bunch of models that don't exist here in the US. They aren't a choice here.

    The cheapest BMW branded diesel car here is the 335d which has an MSRP starting at $44,150, making it almost 2x the price of a base Prius. Of the top of my head, I know of no BMW branded vehicles w/4 cylinder engines currently being sold here.

    I also suspect that many of the smaller displacement diesel BMWs you've cited would be illegal (as is) here in the US due to high emissions. Make them "clean diesels" (still dirty compared to even many non-hybrid gasoline powered cars) or clean enough to be legally sold here adds to their cost.

    Since anti-hybrid folks like to keep citing "payback period", C&D found it was 960K miles to "break even" vs. a 328i and 193K miles vs. a 335i per http://www.caranddriver.com/var/ezf...lication/0dda04134deeae34dad94dcfb884a66d.pdf. It's not surprising that in January 2011, only 160 335d units were sold in the US.

    I hope you've actually learned something from the rebuttals that I and others posted in response to the plethora of myths that you've spewed. It seems that you've provided no or virtually no reputable sources when challenged about the myths and misinformation you've posted here.

    Many people, including me, think BMW makes nice cars. The handle superbly. They're not total gas pigs (at least the 3-series).

    However, if you Google the term "BMW Hybrid" you'll see that BMW is more than a decade behind Toyota in bringing out their own hybrid. We should see the BMW ActiveHybrid 6 here in the US as a 2013 model.

    Then why are you on a Prius forum? Why can't you enjoy your time on your BMW forum talking with like minded people and allow the Prius folks the same? You don't see people coming on the BMW forums from PriusChat badmouting BMWs and extolling the virtues of their Priuses.

    You must be reading different posts than I am. The poster above my post said nothing about the Prius being a luxury car, in fact he said the following:

    So...it would seem he is saying the exact opposite of what you are accusing him of saying.

    Doesn't bother me...I don't have a BMW.

    Nothing vain about trying to make your car look its best, you don't wash your BMW?

    There are absolutely Prius meets...

    This discussion so far seems to have ignored why hybrid technology is superior to single engine technology. The technology is a separate issue than car size, styling, reliability, or personal values.

    The Prius is simply the first high production vehicle that uses hybrid technology. It's a midsize family car with economy better than anything else available. You might call the Smart an economy car. But the Prius gets better mileage despite being double the size.

    Gas engines (and diesels as well) have a very narrow operating range. In addition to a narrow operating range, they have to be sized for the maximum possible demand rather than the average demand. The result of these constraints is that the engines are usually operated way off their most efficient RPM and power.

    The Toyota gas/electric design allows use of a much smaller gas engine than would otherwise be required. When the situation requires more power than the gas engine can provide, the electric motor adds its power to the equation. Using the electric motor draws down the battery, and it is recharged by the gas engine when the situation requires less power to the road.

    Having the electric motor available opens up possibilities in the design of the gas motor. The Prius engine is designed to operate very efficiently. But the cost of the efficiency is that it wouldn't be viable as the sole power source. It can't provide full power while it is starting up. The power curves of the gasoline and electric motors complement each other, allowing both startup and maximum power superior to what can be done with a similar sized gas engine.

    The transmission in the Prius is a unique design that was not possible before modern computer control. It provides a continuously variable ratio without changing any mechanical controls. Changing the ratio does not require meshing and unmeshing gears or adjusting belts. Power does not have to be slacked off during a ratio change.

    In addition to the continuously variable ratio, the Toyota transmission blends the power between gas engine and electric so as to operate the gas engine at the most efficient RPM/power available.

    If the car is going downhill or braking, some of the momentum of the car can be used to recharge the battery. So energy that would otherwise be wasted as heat is instead recaptured for future use. The effectiveness of this technique is obvious by the fact that Prius brakes last double or triple the distance of otherwise similar cars.

    Brakes that don't get used don't have the buildup of black crud on the wheels. My Prius gets washed when the entire car is dirty. The BMW gets washed because the wheels are loaded with brake dust.

    Blending the use of regenerative braking with friction braking is an advanced technology. The switchover between the two systems is essentially undetectable to the driver.

    There is no reason BMW couldn't use a hybrid gas/electric design to produce cars similar to their current ones. In fact they are reported to be working on exactly that. It will be good to see what BMW can do with the technology that Toyota introduced in 1997. I hope their 2013 design is better than Toyota's 1997 design.

    A car is just a machine. Old ladies have plenty of strength to operate the gas pedal on any car. If you want a physical experience, then do something physical. Run a marathon. Or walk around the block if that's where you're at. Participate in some sport that requires skill and strength. Using your strength provides far more sensation than driving a car. Pressing a gas pedal and/or turning the steering wheel of a machine hardly qualifies as physical anything.

    FWIW, it appears BMW is already selling a hybrid X6 and 7 series per January 2011 Dashboard: Signs of Hybrid Upswing | Hybrid Cars. They sold a whopping 5 of the former and 32 of the latter in the US last month.

    The >$88K (starting MSRP) ActiveHybrid X6 is EPA rated 17 city/19 highway, 18 mpg combined. The >$103K ActiveHybrid 7 series is rated 17/24, 20 combined.

    Although the 3 series isn't guzzler, from my earlier post, you can see the times BMW has paid fines for not meeting CAFE standards at http://www.nhtsa.gov/staticfiles/rulemaking/pdf/cafe/Fines_Collected_112010.pdf. One can see how they stack up in CAFE performance at http://www.nhtsa.gov/staticfiles/rulemaking/pdf/cafe/Oct2010_Summary_Report.pdf vs. Toyota and Honda, for instance. If they didn't have Mini, w/their current mix, I suspect they'd be paying fines again.

    Well put! I had the luxury of driving a Prius since 2001. After about 1 month of priusdriving, every other car felt like a tractor, even a Lexus!

    they emit less co2 than the bigger engined cars, so certainly not "dirty". some are exempt from londons congestion charge and are in the lowest road tax duty bracket. road tax or correctly terms as road fund license is an annual duty you have to pay to drive the car on the roads.


    and
    witting style is one of the reasons i get the work in one of the mags. as for grammar and punctuation, writing on a forum doesnt mean i have to be correct all the time with punctuation, let alone use capital letters. i let the proof readers and editor worry about that





    bmw have their reasons for that, what they are i dont know but i'd hazard a guess that if they are to bring out a mainstream model they want it to perform as a current petrol/diesel equivalent, not as half hearted jump into a hybrid market.

    i do my bit for the world, recycling glass/plastics etc at home and at work
