Well what do you know...Rosner Toyota just called back and said Toyota has agreed to Goodwill the replacement of the MFD. Just need to drop by so they can see exactly which one they need to order, then it should take about a week to receive. Will post an update when one happens.
Does anyone know exactly what the failure mode is? Is it something in the touch sensor itself, or a driver chip, or what? What does Toyota do to "refurb" these things, precisely? . _H*
The display has been replaced and at no charge, as promised. The warranty service ticket states "open circuit in screen". Not sure if that's the actual failure cause or a generic cause entry. Main thing in Toyota came through and took care of a customer.
...at which point the AC will come on, or the radio will advance to the next station, or the map will display golf courses, or...
Hello All.... Just a note for those suffering with MFD failure in their 04''s. I have in the last week or so had the telltale signs of MFD failure in mine. Out of factory warranty now (47K), but purchased Xtnd warranty from the dealer at time of purchase in Florida and I chose the top coverage level, termed Gold Plus. Car was a certified pre-owned at the time (24K) and the Xtnd. warranty offered was from Fidelity (JM & A group) which is the primary coverage option for the S.E region, or at least was at the time I am told. Anyway, I was not sure if the MFD part would be covered since those exact terms are not mentioned in the service contract, and it is not a Toyota xtnd. warranty and thus one always has a lingering of doubt as to whether or not something will be covered. Long story short, IT IS! My dealer...Wilson Motors Toyota (Bellingham, Washington) was just fantastic in getting approval and agreeing to change the unit out without any urging. In fact, I was concerned at the time I brought the car in yesterday since the MFD had decided to start working again on the drive over to the dealer! UGH! So, now part has been ordered (refurbed) and will arrive in 3 days and will be put in next week. So, I hope all of you out there have as good an experience as I am having with something that I thought might be a real headache. Ciao! 2004, Silver, 47K, Pkg.#3 Bellingham, WA.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(jaxhpfa @ Jul 6 2006, 10:36 PM) </div> It's been almost three weeks since mine failed, and two weeks since I was told it would be fixed for free, yet no replacement has shown up yet. If you really get your in 3 days, I'll know where free free replacements are placed in the parts line. They will bill the warranty company for yours, while mine comes out of their pocket...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(RichBoy @ Jul 7 2006, 10:06 AM) </div> This MFD-death thing came up while I still had the chance, and I still passed on buying it. If I save $400 plus installation the pain will be worth it. I guess. ^_^ I'm hoping another 50,000 miles will go by without another good reason failing on me. After that, no warranty I could have bought (that I know of) would help me anyway...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(mikepaul @ Jul 7 2006, 11:40 AM) </div> MikePaul... Sorry to hear about your MFD dificulty. I guess my main message then is....the extended warranty has turned out to have been quite worth the $. Hope you can get your issue with Toyota resolved soon. Maybe a diffent dealer would be more helpful?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(jaxhpfa @ Jul 7 2006, 12:46 PM) </div> They were extremely helpful in that I didn't need to get all huffy to have Toyota agree to eat the cost. I'm sure the delay in getting the part isn't my dealer's fault. I hear the dealer actually on this side of town, Dick Dyer, takes you to work then comes to get you when the service is done. While I currently return to my selling dealer for service, I could be convinced to switch if it ever becomes a necessity that I can't wait for my repairs...
OK, the 'new' display is in. I'll be taking off Thursday for that and the steering fix. Times like this I wish I had a laptop...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(lucky400 @ Jul 11 2006, 11:35 AM) </div> MFD= Multi Functional Display. That thingy in the center of the dash. TSB= Technical Service Bulletin. When something needs a recall, it's on a TSB. In this case, there was a TSB for the MFD on the 2004. ICE= Internal Combustion Engine. You didn't ask, but I threw that in.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(aaf709 @ Jul 11 2006, 03:06 PM) </div> a gentle correction- recalls and tsb's are different things. recalls (ssc's) are done for free regardless of warranty status. tsb's are identified common problems and their documented fixes.
MikePaul... Glad to hear it! Patience is often a virtue! Hehehe. I have my follow up appt. tommorrow a.m. myself for the instalation of the refurb MFD. Recall work was done last week, when the diagnosis was done and part was ordered. Can't wait till it is all completed and hope it works properly.
