Hi Ken, most people can't understand the real-time graph and that's totally normal.

That's what the "full battery diagnostic page" and "life expectancy test page" for, you basically just need to follow the instruction and App will perform all the calculation in the background and tell you which block is getting weak, which block is not working properly and what's the remaining capacity of the battery.

just FYI you can also visit Toyota dealership to perform a life expectancy test, however they usually charge 350 USD minimum for that service. You can also buy Techstream from Toyota or from eBay(Pirate) and learn and try to figure things out but that will also cost you way over $8 :)

The biggest challenging being the Prius battery ECU doesn't stop charging at 16V, it often over charge the NiMH battery module to 19v or higher depend on the "max charge/charge control" parameter at that moment, that's why you can see my prototype have this big resistor to help dissipated the extra energy from the over charge, another challenge being the cost as LTO battery is super durable but also pricey, solid state sounds like a perfect candidate but it will experience the same challenge ahead.

Definitely let us know how this turns out. If you have working (and safe) prototypes and willing to showcase in the LA area, I am up for the meetup to see how your pack runs and operates. It really takes a good year of real life testing under different conditions (hot and cold weather, climbing a mountain and going down it, etc) to be considered safe. A good test for it is to take it on a few thousand mile road trip and back and see if the pack and Toyota hybrid system working with the pack perform flawlessly. Yea, too high of a price is the barrier to adoption.

Yes, this project have been going on for more than 3 years now and lucky only one fire with the Lithium NMC battery at the early stage of the experiment, that lead me to the safer LiFePO4 and now the Lithium Titanate. I test different chemistry battery on my two Prius on daily basis hence creating this Dr. Prius App to help, glad it also helps other DIYer + repair shop and earn some seed money in the process.

I've been checking into LTO cells.

It seems like 4 of these Toshiba LTO batteries fit perfectly into 1 Toyota Prius prismatic battery module.

    Loading site please wait...

    SCiB.jpg

I like Toshiba because of quality Japanese cells.

The problem is 4 LTO cells discharge rate is outside the range of the Prius charging and discharging range.
It would have been perfect if the range fits.

So basically it does not look like Prius hybrid system can use them in 4's even though they fit perfectly into one Prius module. We want the Prius charge and discharge cycle to be within the level in the graph before the sharp drop. So I assume you use them in 3 and they are getting slightly overcharged?

That's why apps like yours comes in handy (y) To be able to see in real time what's happening to the modules.

I have tried Toshiba LTO, as a matter of fact I have couple boxes of them, however unfortunately their voltage curve is too flat (too stable) means the voltage stay the same most of the time and then just suddenly empty and drop to 0 v, it cause error code at the end.

I found another LTO factory in China with much linear voltage curve, however their cost is higher and they only accept large quantity, still trying to figure this whole thing out.

That's not good. Doesn't give the hybrid system enough time to respond.

If you are interested in selling those cells. Let me know. I may find other uses for them. They seem hard to find. And they are designed to last forever?!

Hi there, sorry for the late respond, was on a business trip for the past few weeks.

Yup, if you are interested in the Toshiba cell I can sell them to you for a steal price, they are designed to last forever as long as you don't overcharge them, I am in Los Angeles, PM me.

Love the idea of the app, but $46.99 for the "Shop Special" (ie use on unlimited number of cars) is just a leeeeeedle bit expensive, and the $19.99 Basic Package (limited to three cars) would become obsolete too quickly for someone like me who's regularly changing cars (ie Australian pricing).

I am first time using the app, and shock to find this.

There is 5 bar of 33V but 4 bar of 16V. Is there a problem with the bars ?

When the Bar turn Green, Yellow and Red ? what does it means ?

Just wanted to note that this app doesnt work with Kiwi 3, Kiwi 4, or Bluedriver. All I get is connection time outs on iOS or Android. I will get the OBDLink LX

Thanks for sharing Todd, OBDLink LX is the best but a bit pricey, there are other more affordable alternative can be found on my comparison blog: Hybrid battery diagnostic and repair tool for Toyota and Lexus , my new favorite is the Carista OBD adapter. FYI.

Yup, that's correct, looks like you have the Prius Gen4 one or two Eco where Toyota cheap out on the amount of sensors they put into the battery to reduce the production cost, even myself was shocked/puzzled when I first seeing this weird number, and later found out Toyota has so much confidence with their latest NiMH battery technology/safety that they have decided to put 4 blades into one block, compare to the normal 2 blades into one block approach.

With that being said, Dr. Prius App is fully compensated for that so you don't need to worry. Yellow and Red means the voltage is outside the comfort zone of the battery chemistry but a short period of exposure is fine, this is non-lithium after all.

    hope this helps.

Thanks for the reviews of the obd2 sensors. I used your discount on the Amazon to buy Panlong Bluetooth.

How much does your app cost? I think torque is $5. & yours is $20 for 3 tests?

So I just bought the recommended Panlong mini OBDII adapter suggested on the Dr. Prius site to use on my 2016 prius 3 touring but keep getting an error saying "Error, your OBD2 adapter does not support crucial command to retrieve battery data, result: reconnect failed to gen4_5" If someone can please tell me why I am getting this and if there is a way to fix it because I only got this for the Dr. Prius app but it sounds like, despite being a recommended one, it doesnt work. It seems to work fine with the Torque app...I attached a screenshot of the error.
