Dorman Battery Experiences

You made the statement that they are good as new orgnail batterys.were are the gen 2 new cells coming from.the gen 2 cells are not manfactrued any more so that said tell me how they are the same.your statement was pure speculation

I know there has been some speculation about this in the past but I can tell you that it's not true. I buy 5-6 new Gen 2 batteries a month from Toyota and they all have 2015 manufacturing dates on them. Even the new Gen 1 battery that I bought was manufactured this year. If you want to see for yourself I will post pictures. I talked to our regional parts manager about the 12 month warranty and they are very aware of the issue that the customers have with it. The problem is that Toyota corporate says 12 months on every over the counter part, no exceptions.

 

So you say you are purchase gen 2 cells it must be a secret source that makes them just for you!!!!!!!!

 

Your not understanding me. I don't buy modules from any secret supplier. I buy whole battery packs from the parts guys at my local Toyota dealership. Anybody can do it, the part number is G9510-47031 and the list price is $2588.67. I just buy a lot of them so they sell them to me at a discount. The 096Q on these Gen 1 modules indicates that they were manufactured June 9, 2015. So just over 5 months ago. The Dorman battery that I bought for a Gen 1 was $1500 + tax and this new battery was $1950 + tax. For an extra $450 we were able to put a brand new battery in the car. It seems simple to me. On the Gen 2 batteries the Dorman is a little cheaper and the new one is a little more but your still only talking about an extra $800 for the new vs rebuilt.

 

Actually, the Gen3 Prius battery module offers 2Wh/kg less specific energy storage and weighs 5 grams less than the Gen2 module.

 

Let me get this straight you buy toyota battery packs then open and void toyota warranty to post a pic. My question to is were does toyota get gen2 cells when they are not manfactrured by battery maker any more.

If you have any information that indicates that Toyota/Panasonic EV/Primearth stopped manufacturing Gen 1 or Gen 2 modules please present it to the group. Everything that I have seen indicates otherwise.

I don't know if you've ever seen a new battery but my guess is that you haven't. There are no tamper seals of any kind on them. There are 2 10mm bolts and 2 10mm nuts that keep the cover on, that's it. Also, the new batteries come without the 3 main cables installed so there is a small amount of prep work that has to be done to get it ready for a car. Basically you remove the control section from the old battery and bolt it on to the new one. Then you install and torque the positive and negative cables on the sensor side. Then you install the safety disconnect cable assembly to the other side. Install the vent tubing from the original battery. Put the cover back on it and it's ready to go in the car. I've talked with Toyota extensively about this because I want my customers to still get the 12 month warranty from Toyota. They said that as long as the customer has a copy of the purchase invoice and the serial numbers on the modules match and have the right date codes then it will be covered.

The only batteries that I've ever seen tamper seals were the Dorman batteries although I know that other re builders also use them. I don't tamper seal mine but I do keep records of all module serial numbers just to be safe.

 

I work for a company that does business with panasonic on daily basis.they do not produce gen1 or two battery cells only gen 3.there is no need to remove main battery cover at all to acces ecu smr1 smr2 smr3 etc the cover on left is the only one needed to remove to work on transfer electroncics. Sorry very familiar with toyota batterys I repeat no gen 1 or 2 cells manufactured rebulders cant even buy them

 

Sorry man your wrong and the pictures prove it. Your not going to convince me that Toyota built that battery 12 years ago and dated it properly, somehow knowing that I was going to buy it 2 weeks ago. And also that they maintained the charge on it that whole time to keep it from self discharging to 0 volts after the first year. I'm not going to argue with you anymore about it. Your just trying to scare people away from buying new batteries even though it's obviously the better choice if you can afford it. I'm glad that your happy with your Dorman battery and in your defense it wasn't a terrible choice but in 2 or 3 years when it's out of warranty and dies you might be wishing you had spent a little more and just bought a new one.

 

Why do you think junk yards charge so much for used toyota batterys ? No production of new cells.supply and demand do you think if rebuilders could by new gen 2 cells they would not ???

Toyota has a secert supply of gen 2 cells just for you.rebulders can not buy them you must be special you have pic to show how special you are!!! You do not need to remove main battery cover at all just the left side cover looking from the rear of the prius.on less you want to take pic of battery that is!!!

Why do you keep calling them Panasonic?

The company that makes them is Primearth, and they are 80% owned by Toyota and 20% owned by Panasonic. I think if Toyota wants some modules made, Toyota gets them made.

Please read what people are writing and work on your comprehension. You are clearly not reading a lot of what is being said.

Thanks guys I appreciate the support. About the main cover on the Gen 2 pack, it does have to come off to install the main cables which come with the new batteries but are not installed when shipped. The Gen 1 pack has a single cover for the whole battery that must be removed for preparation. If there is anybody that has questions about new Toyota batteries, how to get them ready for service, how to prep the core before before returning it, or what comes with the new ones I am happy to share pictures and knowledge of the process.

Hey Steve,

The new batteries ship with the voltage sensing harness installed but not the main cables that go on the first and last modules in the pack. They include a bag with 4 nuts, 2 for each side of the battery to hook those up (thats 2 for the main cables and 2 for the safety disconnect assembly). They also don't come with the vent tubing which also requires removal of the main cover.
