Do you park then turn off car or turn off without park

All this PRIUS CHAT talk is making me want to get out, and drive my car!

I always use it. Light application on the level, heavier on inclines. Never, or rarely using it could be problematic, like erh, a few other things.

 

Where does the manual say that? (I just searched through the entire 2016 Prius manual...)

In any case, in parallel parking, it's a good idea to turn your wheels into the curb, but rolling your tire into a parking block may well rip your bumper off, on many parking blocks.

 

Our son pulled into a parking lot spot with his car, it had concrete wheel stops pinned to the ground with rebar, one of which, instead of being driven home, was protruding about 5". Ripped a nice chunk outa the front bumper. Never followed up with the place, it's probably still there, doing it's thing.

I was talking about Driver's Manuals, the ones you get a motor vehicle branches. Excerpt from the BC book:

 

I've used the foot brake to stop the car and keep my foot on it or the car would begin to creep forward, another Toyota "design feature" I don't like. So while the car is fully stopped I press the park button which stops it from creeping along. Then I let the a/c keep me comfortable while I put shades in the windshield and gather up anything I need to take with me. Hit power and done. If I'm ever somewhere other than flat as a pancake Houston I'll use the parking brake but around here I don't fool with it. The steepest hill is the lip from the street to the grocers parking lot and I don't park on the hill.

 

Power button unless I plan on sitting in the car post drive to do what have you (listen to the radio, wait for the wife, etc) ...then it's the park button followed by power when the time comes to disembark the starship..

 

It's best to be in the habit of always applying the parking brake, so if you need it, you didn't forget it.

Also, as far as the car creeping forward, any automatic will do that. Toyota's mimicking that behavior.

 

Yes, I know any automatic will do that but when my Prius is in EV mode, which it almost always is at a destination, I'd rather it just sat politely still unless I press the pedal. It doesn't need to creep under electric power just because all gas/diesel cars do. I'd also hope it doesn't jump off the roof just because others do.

 

Do you mean the "little jerk" or lurch when the car rolls against the pawl immediately after you release the brake pedal, if the parking brake is not applied? That lurch should be exactly the same whether you press the "PARK" button before the "POWER" button or not.

 

I checked the Quick Reference Guide again. I'll just do like it says. The 3 P's.
Two extra seconds of time won't kill me.

(But if I really want to cheat, I can skip the Parking Brake as long as I'm on flat ground.)

You guys ever try backing up on a hill? My Prius kept rolling forward. I put it in reverse, but as soon as I took my foot off the brake pedal, the car started to roll downhill before I could hit the gas pedal. I finally just put the parking brake on, then gave it a little gas until it started to go backward and released the parking brake.

 

I back into my hilly driveway every time I park any of my vehicles at hone. Practice makes perfect.

 

So there's no "hill assist" when using reverse gear, uphill?

 

I don't know. My Avalon has it, but I don't use it much.

 

It's usually automatic. Let's say you're on a steep up-hill, waiting at a red light. When the light turns green, the car will hold there a couple moments while you switch your foot from the brake pedal, to the gas pedal. It won't roll backward.

 

On the Avalon I have to press the brake pedal extra hard to engage the hill assist. Then it has a short time it's active (5 seconds?). I don't really need it so I don't use it.

 

My Prius seemed to hold ok when I was stopped at a red light, on a fairly steep hill in Palos Verdes. When I took my foot off the brake, I felt it hold.

But when I needed to back up a hill, in reverse, the car didn't seem to hold when I took my foot off the brake. Not sure if I did something wrong; or if there's just no hill assist when using reverse gear.

 

None that I have ever noticed.

 

This is how I always do it, but regardless of the order, the parking brake is a must. Just look at the Jeep incident where actor Anton Yelchin got himself killed. If he'd just read the owner's manual he might still be alive today.

 

I always push the "P" first. I think partially because I have that hybrid Avalon with a real shifter that I need to move from Drive to Park before I power down - and that way I have a more regular routine. A few times I powered down the Avalon in Drive and the car really squawked at me.

 

I guess it depends, since I now have that option... If I am in a hurry I've been pressing the power button...otherwise I will hit 'P'
