Do you lock your car in your Garage?

You guys have it bad. We often forget to count our blessings ... being in one of the safest cities in the nation (6th) with similar neighboring cities (4th & 11th).

I'd admit leaving the Prius in the driveway, windows down, and the house doors unlocked, but one of you nut jobs might come over just to put the fear of God into us.

Yes, I lock the pri in the garage everynight. Just a habit I guess. The other car, a honda civic hybrid has to park in the driveway, and that too is always locked.

You can't find a much safer place than where I live. People don't lock their houses, let alone their cars. That said, I always lock my Prius. Why, because the 12V battery is the size of 4 D cells. Hitting the lock button is the easiest way to make sure all of the doors are shut, which greatly reduces the chance of leaving on a light and having a dead battery in the morning. With the SKS it's no bother to unlock, so now I always lock.

The wife and I ALWAYS lock our cars, no matter where they're parked. Same goes for the house with alarm set at night when we go to bed. We live in dangerous times and live by the "Better Safe than Sorry" motto.

    True story.....

We have friends who are VERY lax when it comes to security. They NEVER lock their cars in the garage and same goes for the house. One morning they went out to the garage and found one of their Infinity Q45s missing! Police concluded that the thief walked right in from the side garage door and drove the car away, since the keys were in the ignition! Even worse, the keys to the house and the other Q45 were on the key ring. They ended up selling the second Q45, since the thief had the keys to it.

Their lax attitude continued until their home was recently burgularized for the third time! They now lock everything up at night and set the house alarm.....

I should lock it, but I almost never do.

I always lock the door, even in the garage. With the smart key, the difference between opening a locked and an unlocked driver's door is nearly nonexistent. And if I always lock the door, no matter where I am, I'm not sitting in the theater saying, "Did I remember to lock the doors as we walked away?" It becomes automatic, no matter how distracted I am as I get out. And doesn't it also turn out all the lights inside the car, so they're not left on for awhile if you just walk away?

Besides, I once had someone break into my (detached) garage and rifle through my old car, apparently looking for money or valuables. I don't know that they'd have smashed windows to do that, and maybe seeing the little blinking security light would have made them think twice.

I can't think of a good reason not to lock the doors. It's just a push of the button.

Hmm. I just can't see why I would lock the car in a locked garage -- except to make certain I haven't left the car on or a door ajar.

I'm kind of surprised this didn't come up until the 29th post on this thread!

One question: If you leave on the dome light, will the car still lock without giving a warning beep? Yes, I know I can go to my car and test this out, but I just thought I would ask the question anyway. (Lazy Saturday afternoon.)

I usually lock it in the garage. Garage is also locked at night. You never know.

I usually don't unless I am out of town for more than one night. My garage is fully alarmed, so I don't worry too much.

However, if I do hear the alarm in the middle of the night, I use this:

Yes. Locking it has twice saved me from killing the battery.

We live at the end of a dead end dirt road in a rural location. Not only don't we lock the cars/trucks etc but the keys are all in the cup holders. Don't lock the house either, even when away. Of course a couple of very large yard dogs helps. The point made repeatedly about insurance coverage has got me thinking about changing my ways. Jeff

No locking here, I leave the keys in it. If the house catches on fire I hope someone
can get the car out if I am not there.

I'm not sure the rationale for that will work so well. If the house is on fire, I don't know that someone should be taking the time to open the garage door, get in the car and try to drive it away. Opening the garage door would also allow a huge wall of air to rush into the house. In the meantime, anyone who gets access to the garage can just drive away in the car.

My garage burned down a couple months ago (it was my first post on the Newbie board), and it's probably just as well I didn't get the car out. I'm not sure that insurance would cover getting rid of a lingering smoky smell--or even that you could ever get rid of it.

Granted, right now, you can't buy a Prius, but the waiting list is shorter than for a second life!

We have a detached garage with remote control doors, so when shut, they are locked. The car keys, and the garage door remotes go with us into the house, which is locked all the time. My wife has a fear of intruders, so the house is fitted with security screen doors and security windows which are kept locked at all times. However, the cars are not locked. My parents never locked their cars when in the garage, and I have just followed their lead on this. But always lock the car if outside the garage, even if it is only in the driveway.
