yeah, it's the canadian litres per 100km. the earth spins the opposite direction north of the border.

 

Maybe due to Canadian liter/100 km system: lower numbers is the same as higher mpg.

If you take it on a long trip, MPG should improve considerably. (I once drove my wife to Ann Arbor Michigan so she could hit me with a snowball)

If E10 is more than 4% cheaper than pure gas in OK, buy that. If not buy pure gas.

 

at least that would improve your mpg's.

 

I do. Look at my Avatar, my Gen 2 Prius was full! The new v is less full.

 

I wouldn't risk damaging the ICE to experiment with any fuel not recommended by Toyota. E85 engines are made to burn E85 fuel. Valves can be burned and other engine damage can happen when using the wrong fuel.

Diesel fuel should never be used in a gas engine. See how fast the engine stops in an Avgas piston aircraft when using Jet-A .

Though, turbine engines can be tuned to burn Avgas with oil added as a lubricant.

I'm showing E85 to be higher cost than E10 or E0 right now in OK using the internet. So not sure how your math would make that come out cheaper in the end?

Ethanol has less energy per volume than gasoline. E0 = 34.2MJ/L. E10 = 33.18MJ/L. E85 = 25.65MJ/L.

So if all things were equal in price, E0 would go further meaning increased efficiency.

Diesel (35.8MJ/L) has more energy content per volume than gasoline, but it also costs more and will not run in a gas engine.

This is just simple math, you should be able to figure it out in a minute if you just think about it.And if you don't know this, then I doubt you are running E0 since most places in the country only sell E10. These stations sell E0 around you, everyone else is E10. And even then, at places like the "Morgan Food Mart" only the 87 is E0. 83/85/91/93 octanes would contain ethanol.

That is no longer normal in this country. For various legal and economic reasons, most places now sell E10.

 

I believe we have Prius owners who use E85 maybe USA (member WeOH?) and overseas we have propane and CNG and E85 users. In the USA all of those things are not economical (E85 maybe close). In EU they have humongous taxes on gasoline, and they allow much cheaper purchase of CNG, LPG and ethanol. For CNG, LPG in Europe they also allow cheap mods to the cars that are apparently not allowed here. CNG legally here in USA is like a $8000 mod. Popular in Europe to replace spare tire with NG or LPG tank.

You could probably do E85 with mod kit (member here WeOH might be doing that) but there it is not practical or cost savings. Some people in corn states with strong pro-ethanol feelings use E85, but as far as everyday users in the US, not practical right now.

The best you can really do, some of us might salivate over the E0 100% gaso if you have access to. Essentially banned in RFG areas of the country. In theory you might get 10% better MPG. But it depends on the cost E0 vs. E10 and it depends on how your car responds to the fuels - bit of a judgement call but you can measure MPG. If I lived in Mustang, I'd be going crazy testing the variety you have access to. Most of us are in EPA zones where we have no E0 and no energy content variation between grades, so we have no fun at all. You happen to live in a less regulated area so there could be some variations of interest.

In general, Regular is fine unless you have some special interest or needs. Can't do diesel in a Prius!

You sound like a closet Plug_in fan...get a used Plug_in Prius or Leaf and find a cheap way to get elec (solar etc).

 

How does the price of 100% undiluted gasoline (E10) compare with that of E10 there? Why don't you test to compare the difference in mpg between those? With that information and the prices, you could easily figure which gives you better cost per mile. Opinions vary, as to the size of the E10 penalty on miles per gallon. Theoretically, it should be only 3-4%, but some people report much larger differences in their vehicles.

Burning E85 in your car would probably be a mistake. Trying to burn diesel fuel certainly would.

 

If your commute is lower than 40 mph in some areas then learn how to coast then accelerate back to 40 mph. Coasting gets you fabulous fuel mileage. Many times over 4000 to 7000 miles per gallon. (Per my DashDyno SPD fuel mileage device.)

Here is how. Speed up to 40 mph quickly. Let off the throttle so the green bars appear on the screen. (You must be in Energy screen)
Add some throttle until the green bars go away. Now you are coasting. Coast until you are going 30 mph. (Speed up if cars are rapidly approaching.) Add throttle to speed up to 40 mph. Coast again.

You can go for miles this way.

Be aware of the traffic. Safety is the most important thing.
