DIY plugin prius

    so
    i got my elmscan 5 USB interface so i get start reading information form the canbus
    and so now what the voltage is on the prius HV battery and some stuff

    also going to See if i can spoof the battery soc for longer EV mode! before the engine starts running!

    i can already read ICE rpm
    temp of engine and intake air temp and some more standard sensor readouts from the canbus standards
    now i only need to see if i can readout prius specific information like mg1 and mg2 temp and soc battery pack

    i also already build a 210vdc converter so i can charge the battery pack
    when i connect this with a relay to the canbus reading computer i can maybe stop it from charging the HV pack when it gets to around 79% soc

    i hit a little speedbump
    i can readout engine rpm and all the standard SAE code's with pcmscan

    but.... the non standard prius codes from the HV battery controller?

    mmmm anyone?:(

    something to think about when making upgrades to prius HS:

    THS II

    Greater motor output through increased voltage
    The power control unit contains an inverter that converts the DC from the battery into an AC for driving the motor and a DC/DC converter for conversion to 12V.

    In THS II, a high-voltage power circuit that can increase the voltage from the power supply to 500V, has been added. Based on the relationship of Power = Voltage x Current, increasing the voltage makes it possible to reduce the current, which in turn makes it possible to reduce the size of the inverter.

    Also, because the control circuits have been integrated, the size of the power control unit itself has remained almost the same as before.

    taken some time to do the canbus readout and working on a program so i can have a kind of canview
    where i can readout battery soc and voltage

    only its taking a lot of time that i currently dont have

    so.... in time!:cool:

    This is the open source replacement for the CAN-View in the cal-cars conversion that I mentioned in the other thread. As I understand its functional, but still in early beta testing. SOC-spoofing seems to have a lot of advantages over the current method.

    today did my first test drive with the prius canbus monitor

    picture's below

    i can now tell the when you really really slow acc you can get between
    -20 en -30 amps and normal -60 at around 205-220 volts

    even when driving steady speed -15,5 and -20 amps at low speeds is normal
    so when going the dc-dc converter way i need minimum of 30 amps converter
    and thats a lot!!!!

    so i have to rethink my techniek!

    edit :

    and i can say that when you start from a dead stop and you do it slow then you can get -20 to -30 amps @ 210 volts = between 4200 - 6300 watts
    and when driving along i get -15,5 @45kmph = 3255watt

    so when i have 1080 watt our of energy in the PEV battery i can drive 15km.. ( 3255 / 1080 = 3 .... 45 / 3 = 15. ) but then the PEV battery is completely drawn.
    so effectively i can get with a 50 % discharge 7km with a 1080watth battery pack.

    a overdue update
    today i got the contactors
    one for the plusside
    and
    one for the min side

    rated 500amps cons at 320vdc

    i aim for a max of 2000 dollars DIY total cost with a 240Wh pack ( 4800Wh 20h rate )

    The test with the DC/DC converted did not work so i am back to the parallel pack idear.

    i hope i keep it in my budget

    well today i already drive a working plugin for several months now
    never updated this because i made some postst in the nikki topic.

    my max was a 37 km al EV drive today.

    i did not go for the contactor design but used the BMSplus system and OEM Nimh battery packs in parallel to the org oem battery pack

    so i started this topic on 02-01-2008, 04:53 PM and it took me less then 1 year ( was already driving ending 2008 ) to complete it. including some time to deside what way to go. and wait for stuf to get here by airmail.

    only thing i can say is my last gast tank (PHEV ) endid up with a 3,7L/100km (63,57mpg) so thats close to what the gen 3 ( HEV ) is doing
    but i don't recharge the battery pack every day because i do not drive every day
    i also do not drive to work and only charge at home and only take the prius for longer trips and then on the highway.

    the problem i have is that i never now when i am going to drive ( uselly take the bike ) and fast charge is not possible.

    leaving the car charged up al the time is a wast of energy i think because of the high self discharge of the panasonic prismatic battery cells.
