I just did this replacement (250K miles on a 2011) and my car won't start.
Foot on the brake, press the power button, car comes on, I put it in D or R and it goes to N and tells me to put it in park.
    Wt heck is going on?

That don't generally have much to do with your fuel pump and all of that. You replaced your fuel pump because of this problem You may have made a mistake but that's okay so now we want to get to the point where do we know the fuel pump is trying to work sometimes you can hear it buzzing when somebody pushes the button lights up and readys the car and then steps on the gas while you've got your ear at the gas door with the cap off or better yet you have the back seat out and you can put your hand right on the plate that covers the pump hole You can feel the vibration I guess if you really wanted to be the mechanic person about it you could go get gauges and hook up all this nonsense so you can get a physical number on a dial of how many PSI you're pushing to the fuel rail I haven't done any testing like that since the '70s. I can usually tell when a fuel pump's bad pretty quickly and now the cars will tell you. So that's what your troubleshooting now is you can't get into gear and the generation to this would be part of the P-Lock inactivation or activation scheme I do believe in a generation 3 I have no idea what it is I've put those down like horses with broken legs but I'm sure there should be thousands of pages of similar problems with the generation 3 in this form because that's predominantly what's here.

I'm wondering which cars those are. I don't think they're the first three generations, anyway, of Prius.

There are times the car's repair manual will tell you ... that you should check.
