what does "clamp down" mean? i didn't know there were any rules and restrictions on where a warranty is purchased. What is there to clamp down on? Are there restrictions? if i were in the market, i'd probably contact Troy at Toyota of Greenfield and ask him about this issue (out of state issue).

Warranty is registered through Toyota regardless of place of purchase IMO and should be valid everywhere. We should have all the rights to shop around for better price as we do with the car itself.

This sounds like Toyota reacting to complaints of stealership F&I folks being undercut by internet sales.

i bought my 2007 pre-0wned Prius from a small dealer of miscellaneous collector cars, not a Toyota dealer, it was the only Toyota for sale there and had been traded in on a Jaguar or something. My car had 28,000 on it at the time and was still eligible for the Toyota Platinum warranty (until 35,000 miles) as it would've been if i'd bought it from a private party. That's why i was asking what regulation there would've been to clamp down on. The warranty, which was issued to me directly from the Toyota company just expired on 12/14/13.

I got my warranty from Troy couple months ago. Couple weeks later got mail with documents directly from Toyota as confirmation for Platinum coverage for my vehicle. If there is any dealer-related restriction in place, Toyota will not register it, right?

Paul, for what it's worth, when i got my warranty in 2009, the transaction was done by Troy Dietrich, Toyota of Greenfield on the East Coast. He submitted the paperwork to the Toyota Corp. They sent me documentation/certificate of my warranty to my home address on the West Coast. There is nowhere on the warranty that mentions any restriction on where the warranty can be used. If there was, then Toyota would have problems with people who either move to another state or are just traveling in another state--unless i'm misunderstanding what you/your dealer is saying.

As long as this hasn't been changed, as long as there are no restrictions documented on the warranty, what your dealer told you doesn't add up, except if the dealer wants the business and the profit from selling the warranty, and for that reason, wants to discourage customers from buying one from anyone else.

You are asking if there's a way to guarantee where the warranty can be used. You could look at your warranty that you bought and see if there is anything on it that documents a restriction of where it can be used. I'm just wondering how that can make sense, to not allow a customer to use their warranty wherever they want, how would that work? How could it be enforced? Maybe your dealer can explain.

If i were buying a warranty and considering what he told you, if he sounded genuine and credible, i think i would ask to see the letter he is talking about, i would make a copy of it, and i would call Toyota about it (asking "What if i'm traveling in another state," etc). If he said he didn't have the letter anymore, that would be suspicious. I would ask to talk to a supervising manager. That kind of thing. A warranty is a contract, of course, and if on your warranty, there are no limitations on where you can take your car for service, then i don't know how they can limit you. Let me know if you find anything out about that.

    Hi jaw444,

Thanks. I will check out the wording of the contract once I received it.

By the way, is the current price still $1055? If so, there is a significant different than what my local dealer charged. They initially wanted $2195 (or something like that), then the price eventually dropped to $1725. I went for it for now, since it can be part of the 0%/5yr financing and I figured that if I verify that the $1055 out-of-state option is still viable, I can always get a refund...

My impression was that Toyota didn't want guys advertising some sort of extended warranty shop, so some of the players don't appear to be active anymore. Yet if you find their contact info out there, there are still deals to be had.

FYI, I purchased a Toyota extended platinum from a out of state dealer. I did not have any problems using my warranty in my state or new state which I moved to 1000's of miles away from dealer I purchased my warranty or car. However the warranty was purchased about 5 years ago and expired recently. It worked great until my warranty expired. But I don't expect them to work on my car for free after the warranty expires. Hope you have equally good experience.

I just purchased a new Prius Plug-in and ended up buying the 6 year/125k mile with $0 deductible, extended Toyota Platinum Care warranty for $2286.

I know Troy and a few others generally have much better pricing but how far off am I? I financed the vehicle for 5 years with no payments for 90 days through Toyota at 0% interest and included the warranty in the financing since it was free money.

Anway, if anyone has purchased the same warranty recently from Troy or others, please let me know how much better this dealer could have done.

I just revisited the discount-extended warranty situation online. Alas, Toyota shut down Troy's operation, selling Toyota extended warranties nationwide at discount nearly a year ago. Toyota limits online warranties
(Troy now has a web site selling non-Toyota extended warranties.)

That's not exactly correct. Anyone looking for more information should contact me directly either at the phone number, or the email in my signature.

I bought my car last weekend, didn't know about this site then. I purchased an extended warrantee thru dealer, it's for 8 years and 120,000 miles, do you have same? Can I cancel the one purchased thru dealer? The price is in my loan thru Toyota 0% interest, could not resist, would Toyota adjust my lain payment? Thanks

It might still be available...his previous post in 2013, prior to the reaffirmation above. He can't actively participate on the internet.

Please, let us know if the discount still works for those who contact him directly.

This might not be the best place to ask, I have some questions about warranty related to buying a used Prius. If the car is still within 3 years 36k miles, is it possible to purchase the extended warranty as a second owner? Or is that only available to the original owner?

Also, do all warranties transfer over automatically? Such as 3year/36k mile basic and 5year/60k mile powertrain and 10year/150k mile hybrid (California) warranties?

Toyota warranties transfer and I have been advised that an extended warranty may be purchased by a second owner.

I bought a 2007 Prius in early 2009, it had about 28,000 miles on it. As it got closer to 36,000, i bought an extended warranty. It just expired last December. I don't know if warranties transfer automatically, they are probably in the name of the owner who purchased it, but i don't know.

I wonder if you did not use the Toyota extended warranty after the term over, do you get some refund back?

No refund that I ever heard of. But I only bought one, and transferred it to a private party buyer with only three months left. Wasn't worth buying, in my opinion.
