For a full 100% refund, it has to be cancelled within 30 days of purchase. After that, it can still be cancelled but the refund is pro-rated.

I just got off the phone with Toyota Financial about this. The man I spoke with argued with me very tenaciously and tried very hard to dissuade me from canceling. He also said I had to send a letter, instead of a fax, along with my copy of the agreements (which is another snafu I'll detail below). I can't help but feel I talked to another car salesman/"sales manager"/"finance guy", all of whom I've dealt with more than enough by now.

What I need to know is, is this accurate, or just a ploy to keep me from sending it in in time? He said don't worry about when they receive it, as long as the cancellation date and the date on the letter are within 30 days of purchase it will be fine.

So, has anyone else been told the same thing, or have others been able to fax their cancellation?

Here is the other big paperwork snafu:

The dealership asked me to sign a second set of agreements because they grossly misdocumented the starting mileage of the vehicle when they sold it to me. They documented it as having 28 miles on all the paperwork. I thought it had 38 on the test drive because I didn't know the ODO display doesn't show tenths (why, Toyota, why?), until I watched it changing with the miles I knew I was driving.

So they asked me to sign a second set of paperwork, including the agreements on the service and maintenance plans, etc, to get the "ending mileage" on my agreements changed (yes I knew it wouldn't change the ending mileage, I'm not that gullible).

Toyota Financial only has the first set on file, as I had a feeling they would. I am worried that the dealership will either a) submit the second set sometime down the road (or already be in the process of doing so, or b) try to use the second set to stop the cancellation. Either way, I'm very sorry I bought the Prius when I did, and from the particular dealership I did. I am happy with the car, but not with the individuals I am trying to get fair treatment from. All of this sours my experience of the car itself.

I'm just so tired of this clustercuss. I gotta tell you. I love cars, but I sincerely despise what it takes to obtain one and hope it stays reliable.

Just a clarification: said clustercuss is not with Troy or anyone on this forum. I'm just sorry I set foot in the original dealership I bought the car from.

After doing more research on their specific dealership, I have found that they have a bad reputation indeed, although I was referred to them by a few online services. Really I feel the worst because I'm kicking myself for getting swept up in all their slick moves.

I do like the car and I'm very, very glad you're all here, Troy especially.

I would like to find out if the business I just got from Toyota Financial was accurate, though--I thought I had read somewhere that I could fax the cancellation request with no issue.

Maybe I'm confusing it with Mazda. It also seems that the answer I get from these places depends on who picks up the phone and what mood they are in. That has certainly been the case with Mazda.

I'd call back and see if you get a another customer service rep. I know that they've accepted faxed cancellation requests in the past, although this policy may have changed. They do have some wiggle room in that 30 days, since the 30 day time period is actually supposed to start from when you receive your agreement....which typically isn't even mailed out from Toyota until 7-10 days after the dealer submits it to them.

I called again, had a completely different experience, and the rep told me I could certainly fax it in, no problem. Thanks also for the information on the wiggle room. I hope the second "agreement" doesn't cause any wrinkles if it's still "in the mail", but I'll burn that bridge if I get there. :)

    Thanks again Troy

Got my extended warranty and was told EVERYTHING was covered, except wiper blades, oil changes, other fluids, and things like that. Had a blow out, brought to dealer and found out - Tires are not included - EXCEPT under seperate EXTENDED WARRANTY. I got snookered

Sorry to hear that your dealer misled you. I'd suggest reading your warranty agreement so you don't have any more "surprises".

You'd be amazed at some of the stories I've heard about what dealers are willing to say to people to sell these. I could write a book. Just yesterday, I talked with a fellow that was shown the Toyota Platinum Warranty brochure by his local dealer, and they told him that the factory warranty only covered the items in black (which are really Gold coverage components), and if he wanted the items listed in red (Platinum coverage examples) to be covered, he had to purchase the Platinum warranty then and there. If he waited and drove off without purchasing it, the price would go up by $500 the next day. Anyway, I explained to the gentleman that his local dealer was "misinformed", and gave him the correct information.

May be it was already answered (I did not read the 1527 posts :)), but does this discount available to canadian customers?

PS: Maybe the answer should be in the FAQ...

For some reason, the WarrantyShack site is down. I've emailed Danny to let him know, but in the meantime just email at [email protected] if you'd like a price quote.

    Thanks!

    Hi Troy,

Is this Extended Warranty still available? I'm 9 days short of the 3 years since I bought my 2010 Prius and want to get it now. I tried the warrantyshack.com link last night and it doesn't seem to work??? I also sent you an email. Help!

Oh...and while I'm thinking of it.

I'm going to be out of town on vacation next week with limited access to email. I'll get back to anyone with inquiries or quote requests when I get back on the 13th.

Random tip, not sure if it has been posted. If you sell your car before the extended warranty is up, you can get a pro-rated refund on the remaining warranty. Getting back $200 on my 4Runner that I just sold.

My name is Michael and I live in Miami. I just bought (8-10-2012) an 8 year 100,000 mile warranty for $1,149 My local Toyota dealer wanted $1,853 for a 6 year 60,000 warranty. Outrageous! This is a Platinum Toyota warranty that includes things like towing from any location in the U.S. to any Toyota dealer. Rental car up to five days. Roadside assistance and other niceties. Bear in mind, the warranty starts from the day the car was originally put into service. In my case, July 2009 for my 2010 Prius IV. This means I'm really buying a 5 year/ 80,000 mile warranty, but for about $225 a year for some peace of mind I think it's well worth it despite all the extended warranty naysayers. I suppose I've been burned by car repairs to my Mercedes at nothing less than $500 a pop so I'm leery of not having some protection.

I think I got you all beat. I ended up paying $2,500 for the 6yr/100,000 Platnum warranty on a brand new 2012 Prius (sold through Fidelity Warranty Services aka: Southeast Toyota). Also spent another $800+ on the service contract. I must have made the guys day!

I usually don't buy these things but it was a long day at the dealership, my kids were waiting (and crying) in the room next door, and I felt as if I would not get out of there until I agreed to buy the darn thing. Needless to say I will be canceling before the 30 day period.

Question, the finance guy lowered the price of my car by about $1k to get me to buy the warranty. If I cancel the warranty, can they somehow raise the price of the car and ask me to pay more or charge my lien holder more?

Also, anyone deal with Fidelity Warranty Services? My contract states to cancel I must "return this contract to YOUR dealer". No phone or fax number given. Thank.

No they can't raise the price of the car, or change the interest rate on your loan if you cancel the warranty. However, refunds are issued by the selling dealer with Fidelity. You may be able to cancel the policy by contacting Fidelity Warranty Services directly, but the dealership is the one that writes the check for the refund. Fidelity's customer service number is 800-327-5172.

    Good Luck!
